I think it's time I see one with how I am dealing with life, but I want someone very open-minded and good, not a recommendation of a cousin or a psychologist that believes God is the answer. Can anyone recommend one?

I don't know how to go about it or what to expect, but I just feel as if I have a need now.

If you're going to a psychologist and they suggest god as an answer then shouldn't they be reported to some board or other?
Never heard of that.

Was looking at a lot of advertised psychologists on the net, at least two I could remember suggested Jesus was the way, and this was on a directory.

I see a lot of psychologists are specific too, like they deal with kids or women only.

Spend the extra money (yes I know you're in debt from the other thread :p) and see a psychiatrist. They're the real health professionals. Any quack can become a psychologist.

What an ignorant comment.

Go speak to a councilor first, that's what I did.

Then if they think you need to, they will recommend a psychologist.

How so? Unless you were trolling.

You're telling me that it's ignorant to say that a psychiatrist is more of a health professional than a psychologist? Do you even know the difference between the two?

Best to see a psychiatrist first to diagnose your condition and prescribe drugs if necessary. He/she will be able to recommend a psychologist.

I can recommend a really good psychiatrist that charges standard medical aid rates but he's based in Benoni.

Yes I do know the difference between the two. I'm saying it's ignorant of you to say that the one is 'real' and the other is not.
It's clear from your post that you are writing off psychologists as inferior when you don't even know what problem the OP is having.

Don't try and get away on semantics.

Why would you do that?

How do you know the OP has a condition?

Drugs should be a last resort if you have a mental issue.

Pooky why are you always looking for arguments? What I said is clear, infer what you'd like from it...I think you might need a psychiatrist too. :p

I just don't like it when people are so negative towards psychologists and think psychiatrists are 'better'.

It's the proper process to follow. A psychiatrist will be able to establish whether OP has a condition and whether drugs are necessary or not.

Drugs are the last resort? Would you suggest that to someone who is, for example, schizophrenic?

Re: psychiatrists vs psychologists, spirituality in therapy

Depression patients who have both talk therapy as well as medication have higher remission rates than patients receiving either treatment alone.

Many people say they have spiritual needs, and many patients do benefit therapeutically from attending to such spiritual needs. Carl Jung was a big proponent of spirituality in therapy.
