It's the proper process to follow. A psychiatrist will be able to establish whether OP has a condition and whether drugs are necessary or not.
Drugs are the last resort? Would you suggest that to someone who is, for example, schizophrenic?
I would consider schizophrenia a mental problem that needs a last resort action.
And if you go to a Psychologist and you have a mental disorder and they believe that you need medication, then they will and should refer you to a Psychiatrist, not the other way around.
Often Psychriatrists are way too trigger happy with dishing out meds for people.
I could go to a Psychiatrist tomorrow and probably get them to prescribe me some depression medication, or if I felt like it maybe some ritalin; but then again that's a problem with trying to treat mental problems, is a heavy reliance on what the patient is saying about their own mental wellbeing.
People can convince themselves that they have all sorts of weird and wonderful things.
