diffrent worlds, no wonder the taxis are afraid of them;

they going to kill regular taxis quite soon; unless the goverment allows meter taxis to cruise;

or they introduce a medallion system like NYC........

otherwise in SA at least for now it looks like they will finish off all meter taxis quite quickly.

It is an interesting read, although it is a pity he chose Zebra Cabs to be representative of metered taxis. Zebra cabs is good by metered taxi standards as far as I know - far better than the average.

His point about regulated charges is a good one though. If what he says is true, then Zebra cabs is unable to compete on price. What the government should do is do away with prescribed rates altogether and let the market sort it out. Yes, Uber cabs should be regulated as far as safety and the RAF goes, but not price. It makes no sense to regulate the price.

Also interesting - Uber Black is R14 more expensive for faster and better service. UberX would be cheaper and faster than Zebra.

R14 price difference for a ride in an A4 with climate control and leather seats vs a ride in a Lavina with neither? Why not a UberX comparison, IOL?

Within a minute of logging on, my trip had been booked, paid for, and I had even been sent details of the driver...

Another great example of the stellar reporting on IOL. If they can't even get the basics right...

lawd, they could have at least taken another taxi or two and a different uber class to go with the black.

This is an unfair comparison. If you look at Uber X which competes with Zebra Taxis then the fair would have been between R80 - R101... this is fact as just did fair estimate on the app...

No the comparison is all wrong. Uber X would have been max R160 (probably less). And Zebra cabs is at the better end of the scale. They also don't factor in availability - easy to get a metered cab at a shopping centre, not so easy in the suburbs at an obscure address at 2am and this is where Uber excels.
