I haven't seen this posted here yet but I think it deserves mention. We have the triple!

Springboks = #1 in IRB rankings
Proteas = #1 in ICC Test rankings
Proteas = #1 in ICC ODI rankings

And then of course let's not forget our two golds and one silver at the IAAF World Championships in Berlin which gave us 9th place on the medal table (just below Great Britain in 8th and above Australia in 10th!)

Good times! Well done SA! Let's keep give them carrots!

Yeah, it must've really put a dampener on the Spanish football fans' celebrations last year when they realised they were only ranked 407th in Test cricket.

You're a fool.

Show me the ranking for that please? Are spain even recognized as a cricket team?

Being 70th in a world for soccer is terrible considering we used to be really good.

Anyways you cannot dominate the world in every sport :D

Nope there will not be, the biggest talking point may just be if we do not get past the group stages.

If we do let the celebrations start and hope we get a really easy team :D

I don't think there will be much to talk about unfortunately.

You can wait until then... I will start celebrating the fact that we are dominating cricket and rugby right now. And even in July next year, if our team does not perform, I will be celebrating the fact that we are hosting the biggest sporting event in the world.

It really must be tough not being able to celebrate any successes that your country may have. I suggest some of you guys don't have kids as you are more than likely the kind that would punish them for only getting an A and not an A+....

Lance why are you always so emo bud?

We are all celebrating but the discussion turned into the SA soccer team.

Lance i did not even check you monitoring the ashes or commenting on it, did you even know we would be the no1 test team if the aussies drew or lost the ashes? Not to mention you keep wanting morne to fail and picking on the best rugby team in the world, i think you need to celebrate my man. I have been celebrating every time the aussies lost or the english looked like winning. I have been celebrating every time we have won a tri nations game as have most of us.

I was celebrating when the SA soccer did rather well in the confed cup. So please don't tell us what kind of people we are when all you can say after a good tri nations game is how poor morne steyn is while we celebrate regardless of who played.

Lol, yes wasn't that 10 years ago this year? With a team like ours 1 Mini-WC trophy a decade is not enough :(

Hey!
If the poms can think they still have the best football team in the world because they won the 1966 WC, then we can enjoy our win as well.

So why did the conversation turn into a discussion about the SA soccer team anyway? I did not post it in the soccer sub forum and I specifically posted about the successes of our rugby, soccer and athletics teams. Our soccer team is not involved in any tournaments at the moment and has only been playing warm up/preparation matches for 2010.

In fact, I'll answer my question. The reason the discussion turned to our soccer is there are far too many people on this forum who are pained to ever celebrate any of South Africa's successes. They feel it is their duty to knock everything in this country. And yes, you'll argue that I am just as guilty of always "defending" it, but I cannot really see why I should be attacked for the latter whereas, in my eyes, the former just seems to make no sense when it is the country that you live in.

I also choose not to celebrate an individual in a sport which is a TEAM sport. When the discussion turns to individual players then everyone is entitled to their opinion. I will still continue to celebrate Springbok victories but if I feel a certain player has shortfalls or limitations I will say so. You may have noted that the specific thread to which you refer was titled "Morne Steyn vs Ruan Pienaar". It asked nothing about the Springbok performance. This thread, however, was quite clearly titled "Good times for SA sport!" and then specifically referred to rugby, cricket and soccer.

uhm.... don't forget we've got the super 14 as well, and soon to have tri-nations :D

Exactly! That's the spirit! ;)

Nobody was knocking the SA team though, it would be awesome to have a great soccer team.

Soccer
Cricket
Rugby

3 of the biggest sports in the world and it would be great if our soccer team could be better.

Am i mistaken in thinking good times for SA sport does not exclude soccer? It was great times in the confed we gave some big teams a run for their money, now we just could improve on that it would be awesome.

Why did you leave SA soccer out? maybe we are not ranked 1 in the world but if you watched the confed cup we did very well. Seems to me you only care when we are highly ranked in a sport, our soccer team will become great one day but for now we just prey we get past the group stages :D

Killa, you are clearly just bored now and arguing for the sake of arguing. I stated in my response to you already that the SA soccer team are not involved in any competition at the moment as they are preparing for the world cup. Their ranking is therefore not of particular relevance at the moment. Further to this MY thread was about achieving the number one ranking in three "sporting codes". These number one positions have all been achieved very recently! Hence RELEVANCE! As already (very sarcastically) mentioned by me I could just as well have looked up the jukskei rankings too and posted on those. I didn't for a specific reason. We are number one in the three codes posted! That was the P - O - I - N - T.

And even further to this, I will be on standby to post a thread when the soccer team does reach number one.

Oh, and seeing as though you are bored, use the search function and have a look at the numerous previous comments of mine regarding the SA football teams performances.... and that from someone who is not even the biggest fan of football as a sport.
