Subscribed. We are also looking to go somewhere within SA for a week in November. Things are damn expensive as usual. :crying:

Has anyone been on the Contiki's to Thailand? They are not bad in terms of price but is the experience any good?

If you can't get away for a long break, you can at least visit a National Park for free starting tomorrow 22 Nov till 28 Nov with SanParks.

Excludes the Simonstown Penguin Colony and free access will only be valid until Friday 26 November at the following national parks - Addo, Kgalagadi, Kruger and the Tsitsikamma section of the Garden Route National Park.

Also accommodation in the parks that have the facilities still have to be paid ;)

Does this include camping? As I am thinking of getting a big a tent as possible, this seems to be the only affordable way to have a vacation these days.

It mentions only 'free access'. It does not look like anything else is free.

No package deals for cape town really.

Flying from Johannesburg - 6 days in Cape town (next week) is coming to 22500 rands for flights, accommodation & rental. Probably 5-7K more for food, entry fees and stuff. 30K damage.

8500 - BA flights for 3
10000 - accommodation for 3
4000 - car rental

May be a bit OT but are all sites becoming like 'Only 1 room left' like onedealaday.co.za? I am pretty sure I had checked some hotels a month ago and there was 1 room left back then and that room seems not taken yet for many hotels yet. :) Haunted room perhaps ?

Accomodation is a bit steep. Did you check Airbnb?

you can do it much cheaper if you plan it by yourself. the hostel vibe is just as good as the Contiki's.

but to answer you question, the vibe is really fun but can be dependent on your group (base level of fun pretty much guaranteed though). also everything is taken care of so no planning/worrying at all.

the negatives are they push their paid excursions and tipping of staff a fair amount.

Which Contiki did you do?

Has anyone used Lekkeslaap before? They seem to have some good deals.

Have used them on a number of occasions . Only had an issue once but that was owner withdrawing venue after confirmation to accommodate a larger crowd (money talks). Luckily it was not short notice.

Did the Thai Island Hopper East back in 2015. This was a ton of fun. Raved so much about it a guy at work went on it and loved it just as much.

What was quite funny about my tour group was that about 60% of it were from ZA. So much for getting away from South Africans.

Thinking of doing the same one. Would you have preferred to do it solo if you had to do it over again?

I've been to two international events, one in SA and one abroad and I find that people from South Africa and the SADC inevitably end up linking up and forming their own circles. May be due to cultural differences because people from outside the SADC are about as foreign as Russians.

I did do the tour by myself, just turned out to be majority of the tour group were from ZA and Aus. I believe we got along just fine. It also helped quite a bit because I went to Bangkok after the tour and it turns out a few other the others in the group were headed there as well, so we explored Bangkok together.
