Today, or rather yesterday, was my last day with WBS and iBurst. Finally, freedom has never felt that good! Ofcourse WBS had to spoil my happiness by cutting my connection a day earlier (on the 31st, instead of 1st Sep, 1.72 GB remaining which I planned on using to check my mails in my work-from-home day) but then - it wouldn't have been WBS if there was no problem  . I would be lying if I said that this didn't p1ss me off .. royally ... but at least all these worries are behind me.

I just want to mention the name of a rude WBS helpdesk persona - Charlton (who in all fairness tried to be pro-active, did call back and was offering a (rather misguided) explanation as to why I am without a connection), and the name of one of the biggest liars in accounts - Pinki - who promised to call on two separate occasions and broke her word.

Compliments for trying to communicate with/help clients properly go to: Tsepo (helpdesk), Marylyn (accounts), Shaun, Thami and the technicians (Sam and Bongi).

So long WBS and thanks for all the stinky fish!

WBS iburst package rating:
UTC, Patch Antenna, Linden Ext. (100 m down the street from the Linden tower, picking up Northcliff as well)
Signal strength: 100%
Speed: daytime: dial-up; night - 150-200 kilobits/s
Customer service - extremely poor
Accounts service - poor
Overall: Poor

JJ,
I admit I am looking into an alternative to dial-up for daytime connectivity for those days when I work from home (mails and a couple of sites). Otherwise I have a fast and reliable daytime connection at work which I can "abuse" as I wish (except p2p).

Fairlady, Hi, I am an iBurst reseller, I read your message with great interest.

We have developed an antenna that "kicks but" I would like to extend an invitation to you. I will organise a new modem(desktop ) and setup the iBurst with my antenna, if you are not satisfied with the result I will not charge you a cent, however if you are, I will charge for the antenna, installation, etc. Cost to be advised before you go ahead.

I have iBurst working at my home, getting about 800K during the day, you are welcome to come and see any time!

I am up for a challenge?

To blow my horn a little, I have connected clients in areas where iBurst say only extreme outdoor usage or no connectivity at all! Most of them connect at 500k >. References available upon request.

For more info on the antenna and ordering online, please visit http://www.phoenixnet.co.za/shop/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=38
Register, order and pay, I will be there in a flash to sort out you problem.

Dear Phoenixhost. Did you read the bit where she said that she's literally a few hundred metres from the Linden tower? Did you read the bit where her UTC reported 100% signal strength?

What on earth do you think any kind of antennae is going to help?

Dear Wolfgang.

I have attached two images for your perusal.

http://rodent.za.net/files/phoenix.gif
http://rodent.za.net/files/phoenix2.gif

It should be obvious what happened here. You pasted a link into this forum, that contained your Zen-Cart session ID.

When anyone else clicked on this link, they essentially "inherited" your session, and could look at your account details, order things on your account, etc.

I would advise that you reconfigure your Zen cart to use COOKIES for session tracking.

Good luck with the rest.

Fairlady it's easy to biach and moan but what exactly are you going to use now?

I've read in myadsl forums between sentech, 3g, Iburst, adsl everyone at ADSL is biaching about how *** ADSL is and how slow it it.... sentech people are complaining how crap they are and everyone here at the iburst forum is also biaching about what crap service... 3g is the only one I haven't read up on seeing as it was so expensive for it :(

Worst of all is ppl with adsl are cancelling so cos of telkom, **** service, unfair cap, rumour of pay per meg....
people with iburst is cancelling as 1 day they have *** the next they ok, or the grunts at wbs dont' know what's goign on.

I think 3g could be a better option...

but I'll stick with my 3gig cap with 64kb there after, as I'm not willing to pay telkom a cent more...

just my 2c

HomeDSL192 is steady as a rock

ic said:
@fishfly, looks like I should spend more time reading the same stuff you're reading - so far HomeDSL192 is steady as a rock reliable compared to iBurst, but the pay-per-gb uncertainty is worrying - still be cheaper than iBurst AFAIK...

I agree IC, and I am soo glad my nailbiting, pageswont load, death by cap, spongey wireless days are over.

And i agree with MyFairestlady, I wouldnt walk back down that path.

Thanks for pointing out that my session Id is copied with the url, I guess i was logged in a the time and did not realise it.

I will stick to my initial offer and even extend it to anyone else out there, the only thing I can say is put me to the test, unless you actually enjoy moaning about WBS all day/every day!

As I said our antenna does actually work!, not in all situations, but more than not.We can not perform any miracles, but we can give you the best possible connection with our antenna!

Her being so close to the Linden BS don not mean anything! If you understand how the iBurst network works, you would know the problems and how to over come them.

Here's a thought for you, Genuine ignorance is... profitable because it is likely to be accompanied by humility, curiosity, and open mindedness; whereas ability to repeat catch-phrases, cant terms, familiar propositions, gives the conceit of learning and coats the mind with varnish waterproof to new ideas. ~John Dewey

The offer is open ,PM me or contact me via my website.

Is there a limit to how much signal strength you can recieve to improve your connection? My signal (recieve I assume) varies between -62 dB to -67 dB which is supposedly high but I still dont get constant 1 Mbps. Sometimes spikes up to it, but average closer to 650 Kbps these days.

The question is can your antenna improve my situation (e.g. improve transmit strength ... if thats the problem)?

Possibly its just congestion on my tower (Kyalami), which has a load between 2 & 3 ?

Possibly its the fact that the two towers I can see Kyalami & Midrand are in line with each other (one behind the other) from my premesis. Maybe the two interfere with each other?

Any additional info on how iBurst works would be appreciated.

Well 62 - 67dB is a very strong signal, you must be able to touch/see the The castle BS, some questions:

1. Do you have line of sight from the antenna to the BS?

2. What are pkts sent/recieved use this download. then do a ping test and look at the pkts r/s it should be rolling continuously like mine, I will email it to you if you want to see it, I have just recorded a sample.

UOTRACE - download

3. do you have any kind of antenna attached to the UTD?

Let me know your results

Strictly no. If I put my head exactly in front of my antenna and look towards the Castle, there are two trees is the way, but you can sort of make out the Castle through the leaves.
