My word people are dumb. So what if your advert is next to an offensive video?

No, people are not being dumb. Some of that advertising revenues goes to the content creator - i.e. the person that uploaded the video. These companies now say they don't want to advertise alongside such video, which they can say (because they can choose where and how to advertise), because they don't want to fund the creators of such videos.

lets think about this.

regualr media is loosing support.
youtube based neutral news is growing.

unfortunately these channels are not afraid to call out a big company for being full of poo.

biig company removes sponsorship.

google is not going to loose out on ad revenue as smaller start up companies will jump on the lower costs.
youtubers will get more ads again, and thus end up making money they would not have gotten anyway.

so big companies will see sales dissapear and corporations will collapse.

net positive to the world.

The only issue to them should be: "do the people watching this video want my product".

The fallout from this is going to be more censorship, this time monetary based, if you say/show something Google believes their advertisers won't like, in which ever shape or form Google determines then you cannot monetize that page/website/video etc.

The furor has already started in earnest on YouTube from a while back.

I thought that was the standard everywhere around the world.

So what's offensive? What one person deems bad isn't deemed bad by another. The only issue would be if it showed a porn advert on a religious site perhaps. Google should have long since had a system where you can choose where to show your adverts or which adverts you accept. Other platforms are clearly more advanced in this area.

I bet the companies advertising aren't doing their own checks to see which videos are displaying their ads and flag them to get monetisation removed.

Let them choose beforehand where to advertise then... oh snap It's too easy to automate your crappy ads everywhere and then bitch because it's on a video you don't like...

They do. People just seem to have forgotten how to use it.

Then why so many restrictions? Basically only one category you can use for sites and ads and that is "things that don't offend."

Google does offer that. Seems most just don't know how to use adwords.
