Google’s free Wi-Fi tested – 1Mbps downloads

Google recently announced that it has launched free Wi-Fi hotspots for the residents of several communities in the Cape Flats through its Google Station programme.

The hotspots were launched in partnership with Think WiFi. Google told MyBroadband in an interview that each hotspot has 100Mbps of either fibre or microwave backhaul, depending on what is available.

Watch a video every 30minutes in exchange for shitty speeds? What could go wrong.

It is free? Whats the problem.

You can't even download a iso in the 30minutes before the connection drops out. I get that the people are getting free and that they shouldn't complain. I just don't see how they will be using the internet for any form of useful information gathering or broadening horizons when they have to reset every 30minutes.

Just because it's free doesn't mean it has to be ****.

Ok so I wont trying to pick up the connection from home and use it at my main internet lol

Highly doubt the intention was for it to be used to download "iso's".
Watching a video or browsing the net should be okayish on the connection.
Can't expect very much from a "free" service.

As sad the connection time and speed is, it's most likely so people won't abuse it, if it was super fast people would find ways to abuse it e.g. sit and pirate stuff and sell it.

It's something and a step in the right direction. It is still a good resource for the children of the communities to go do research for school projects etc good job Google :)

Wow, so they can now stream and download for free, so they killing SABC even more.

Who will pay for a TV license if they have free streaming??

It's not intended to download large ISO's! It's main aim is for free basic access to the internet and for education purposes

I used it while at AfricaCOM and didn't have any issues - look, it's FREE and those who can't afford internet access are getting it and it "works"

It's not like they need to do any major downloads or what not - and we know some will try and abuse it... reality is, at least Google are trying to "connect" everyone and "free"

You don't have to watch the video - you just have to RECONNECT each time - so... choices.

I think it is great. It is free and so what if you have to watch a add or two. I am sure people in these communities appreciate it.

I just hope the equipment is secured properly and does not get stolen.

We do the exact same when viewing a Youtube video. So I also don't see the problem.
