Hi Guys,

I have recently got ADSL at home. I am using a Billion 7202G router, Firefox browser and Telkom ISP.

Since I have had ADSL I can't send mail from GMail - Everything else works great - can send from my Telkom mail, but nothing from GMail.

I have cleared my cache - checked my firewall settings and checked all the other areas possible - no joy.

My Gmail worked fine on Dial-up.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Hi,

Thanks for the replies...

>> Can you log into the gmail account?
Yes, no problems there - can read, move mail, pretty much anything else except sending

>>Also are you going to https://www.gmail.com/ or http://www.gmail.com - it >>shouldn't make a difference over ADSL but over a very slow connection it has >>made a difference for me ...

Using http://mail.google.com/mail/

>>Are you trying to send email for your GMail account, from your email client >>[e.g. Outlook, Thunderbird, etc] using Telkodemonopoly's smtp server >>[usually resolves to smtp.saix.net]?

No, at this time I am only using the webmail interface. I have configured Outlook to use Gmail, but can't read inbox even - get and error
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Task 'GMail - Receiving' reported error (0x80040900) : 'The server name you entered can not be found on the network (it might be down temporarily). Please verify that you are online and that the server name is correct.'
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Have double and triple checked server name and setting against the help from
Google. Can ping and run a tracert to the host - so it is visible on the network.
Firewall allows outgoing and incoming to both pop and smtp host addresses...

No idea where to turn to next!

wierd i've been using gmail for a couple of months now on adsl withTelkom Internet too at onestage.

FROM GMAIL. Mine does however work fine at the addy listed below. :)

I'm outside of the US. Why can't I access Gmail?
Access to Gmail from countries and territories outside the United States may be limited because of proxy issues. If you're not in the US and can't log in to Gmail, try accessing your account at https://gmail.google.com.

that is very very odd, check your browser settings, make sure you have cokies enabled, though you would not log in if you didn't

sending from webmail has nothing to do with you local connection as it gets sent from the gmail servers

you should be loged in or redirected to https://gmail.com

GMail haa...

There is a small executable file on the GMail website that will put the settings automatically on Outlook Express. I first had to install this to access the POP service of GMail in Outlook Express. I put the identical settings in first manually but i could only receive mail and not send. After I installed the executable it all worked fine.

GMail is cool... just sorry that my inbox's capacity is larger than my monthly cap... I'm keeping GMail on hiatus until Telkom reconsider their cap, i hope.

The last time I checked... GMail was only available to US residents. google South Africa must start their own GMail.

ok i don't know what you're on about with gmail being exclusive to the US, but i digress.

i've been experiencing this problem too, but only since yesterday.
sending anything via gmail is greeted with only an error message in both firefox and IE (since i've tried both in my troubleshooting).
the error message says, "The document contains no data."

i get the same error when i try to post on some other forums - so far i've only experienced this on pages where i've had to submit data.
i've rebooted my router, my pc, flushed dns, changed dns servers, flushed cache, cookies, you name it.

it's driving me up the goddamn wall.

fwiw i'm on 512/telkomadvanced3gb/linksys wag354

edit: oh wow. i didn't even expect this post to go through what a frikkin' miracle

Problem Sorted!

Hi Guys,

Thanks for all the advice! The https://gmail.com worked! Eventually I picked up a number of other sites that had problems connecting or staying connected - like Windows Update etc.

Eventually I suspected my pc firewall - installed a different firewall - saw that was not responding at random intervals.

Decided to do a full re-install of my machine - now working much better.

Thanks again to all for your valuable advice.
