Google Maps will avoid crime hotspots in South Africa, promises country boss

I’ll happily eat my words on this one. I said in the previous thread that I didn’t think this was a viable feature in the modern political climate.

I’m very glad to see I was wrong and the safety of users is taking priority.

Did Waze not do something similar years ago in Brazil. Certain communities went banana's because they said it actively discouraged tourists from coming to their neighbourhood and spending money. Waze then stopped the algorithm thing that rerouted people around flagged dangerous areas.

If my memory serves me well, didn't Garmin or Tomtom try this about 20 years ago i think their partner was Mapquest or Afrigis or something I had my first job and got one - they wanted to make their devices not route people through townships due to the safety and it was deemed discriminatory.

“Then we’ll look at a more kind of national solution, which is looking at the crime hotspots around the country,” he said.

“I believe there’s 59 of those.”
There is only one of those. And it is the country.

So these hotspots can be mapped and better routes rerouted around these stationary crime areas? How many police officers do we have, how many police cars do we have? I have a suggestion for you fancy hat guy lord of security and beach patrols....

Probably only get implemented in cape town, can't see the governing party doing this.

During the protest riots in 2021, Google allowed riot hotspots as an overlay. Can't we just create our own one from community sourced data to do the same thing?
