Google (search) is dying, says former Google SA head

He qualified the statement, explaining that people are using social platforms like Facebook and Twitter and asking questions there because they get more dynamic and personalised results.

WTF, who goes on to facebook to have their questions answered? Facebook is the last place I would ask a question.

I get the point the guy is making, but saying Google search is dying might be somewhat of a sweeping statement. It might be in decline, but I'm sure the majority of people are still using search now, and I expect this to be the case in the future. And if this changes any time soon, I'm sure Google will quickly adapt to meet the demand. One might argue that Google+ is already a step in that direction.

I think people are using Google Search more than ever, because its so easy to access on a variety of platforms.

Its the Google generation!

Seach is dying - true. But explanation is wrong.

Search engine is dying when is exploited by junk web sites. When search doesn't take you to the manufacturer site in the first place, but to the third-party Web site subsequently reporting "Your search for <blablabla> - found 0", something is wrong.

I don't think its dying and still get what I'm looking for on the first page of results most of the time.

In my experience, this rarely happens and is rather the exception than the rule.

Exactly go on Facebook and ask: Is my 4 inch penis a good size?

I think Safford Masie is clutching at straws to make himself feel relevant now.

Google is trying to be too many things right now. I dislike the whole google+ and all these extra bells and whistles on google these day. Also, the auto correct or words is a little overboard on google (especially when you are looking for specific search terms)

I'm trying use http://duckduckgo.com/ - admirably the results aren't as good as google for some things but I feel that if I keep using them [and thus sponsoring them] they can become a great search engine alternative to google.

I agree, when I read the statement, I thought this guy is smoking something.
HE may be able to go onto FB and ask the question as he has "millions" of friends, and they are pretty clued up due to the paths he rolls in, but I wouldn't ask my FB friends 95% of my questions, let alone expect them to answer them. I think he is right in that maybe FB users are on the social network so much, they would prefer to ask from FB... so why not just pop a search link in FB? Oh wait, there is already one... top of your browser in the top right corner, called SEARCH GOOGLE (depending on your browser :) )

No way will I ask questions on a social network like Facebook.

As long as Google is there, I will continue to use it.

Google aint dying! I have never heard anyone say 'why don't you Facebook it'

Dying or not, Google are very worried about this. If you look at the bottom of your search results now you'll see something like:

"Need some input from friends? Ask on Google+"

For some searches people are more likely to take the recommendation of someone they've had some interaction with. Search "restaurant" on Google, and if you've got location activated it'll give you the restaurants nearby. Do it from home. Are those the restaurants you'd recommend to a friend? Now, would you trust Google's recommendation if you were in a foreign city? I would prefer the input of someone with local knowledge.

I won't ask on Facebook but take Mybroadband for one. If Google fails me or it's about something local I always get a better response on here.
