Google to launch “child-friendly” Chrome, YouTube

YouTube is already child friendly...

erm no it isn't... my 9 year old daughter has followed links from watching minecraft videos to gay porn.... It only works if people flag content as inappropriate. Until that has happened, all content is considered safe..

The should create restricted accounts.

For example, you have your original login and then you can create users on that account which can only view channels that you preselect. This way you can add trusted channels and prevent any nasty surprises for the kids.

YouTube, where you can watch a music video and then afterwards the miracle of childbirth.

But watch this first:

The company will likely create specific versions of its search, YouTube and Chrome products for children aged 12 and under, USA Today reported, adding that Google did not provide a timeline for the rollout.

When I created my daughters account, one had be be 13 to sign up for a Google account. Seems to filter age specific content well. But still - what would be considered safe for a 13 year old is not necessarily what one would want their 9 year old to see.

I think this is a good move from Google and welcome it.

I thought YouTube didn't carry porn, even if it was flagged?

Never seen actual pr0n myself and majority of users are even afraid touching that subject, and even bleeping out swearing. However, I've seen some playtroughs of particular games, some had mature content limit but other had none.

On barely related note, someone did social experiment: One guy made accurate NSFWesque flash animation of popular children's series in a style of "10 years later" and named it in similar way as the rest of legit cartoons, yet he put age rating in name. He got around somewhere 800k view in short time before it got taken down. Scary stuff.

I would like something like that myself that blocks particular users or videos, but I'm using custom script that removes videos/playlists by channel name. Best stuff ever.

Kids will see what they want to see. Trying to stop them is futile.
