Gordhan wants scrap metal export ban in bid to halt infrastructure vandalism

Ayyyyy, finally, someone woke the **** up to this. Thx to scrapyards playing along with the vandals, we see the amount of looting and vandalism of infrastructure.

We now have a department or office that deals with cutting the red tape, let's see how effective it is.
A bit ironic tho.

A department devoted to cutting red tape when the establishment and existence of said department make the red tape worse.

Not really, Cyril got into lots of trouble for it, because he did not appoint comrades but leading professionals from the private sector, his enemies accused him of undermining his own ministers.

Here's the red tape guy.

Yes finally.

Still to this day a simple Alibaba search for copper scrap from South Africa shows how many random companies are selling our infrastructure as scrap.

Or the government, through their police could try doing some policing? Stopping exports is a disruption to the legit recycling industry.

these scrap merchants are like mushrooms - pop up all over the place. there is one down the road near my college - they think they own the road and block it with cars / fork lifts / bakkies / trucks / containers / people / vagrants with drag along crates / shopping carts etc. trying to off load scrap all day, try ride past without something reversing out or turning in front of you‍

soon after they opened in Riley St, the metal railings on the railway bridge along Jan Van Riebreeck Dr just south of Voortrekker & Giel Basson intersection started disappearing piece by piece!

There is one next to my dad's factory.

Saturdays you can watch the vagrants come in and sell scrap then buy drugs from the railway tunnel next to the scrap yard as the two seem to go hand in hand. Later in the afternoon you see the police come on for their daily cut of the profit or "patrol" as they prefer to call it.

From time to time there are loud explosions as the scrap yard "accidentally" cuts into pressurised containers as they make everything less identifiable.

The Nyope addicts have some serious fights but seem to be immune to pain, saw a guy hit in the face with a brick to the point where his face changed shape, he lost some teeth and his ear was flattened like a pancake get up and walk back into the drug tunnel as if nothing happened, leaving a bunch of tooth shards and around 1/2l of blood on the tar.

More power to his pen. Off the topic but I curse the "red tape" and I have internet and transport. How an emerging subcontractor can get CSD registered, registered on the municipal vendor list, tax clearance, CIDB grading, letter of good standing from workman's compensation and maybe 5 other forms I just don't know. Then he still has to pay kickbacks to the ward councillor and business forum. Eish SA.
