Johannesburg - South African Nobel laureate for literature Nadine Gordimer was robbed and locked in a storeroom by thieves who assaulted her in her home, said police on Saturday.

Gordimer (83) was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1991. She is noted for her novels and short stories about the inhumanity of apartheid.

Oh the horror.

WE should be grateful she wasn't murdered; the whole country should breathe a sigh of relief... some losses this country CANNOT AFFORD.

We need a happy well paid Police Force with good morale.

Poor Nadine. :(
She must be in shock.
I noticed she had the courage to hang on to her Wedding Ring.

As one of the ANC stalwarts she can now say she has also tasted the ugly side of crime overwhelming our beloved country.

I hope she gives the Top ANC people a good talking to, not that it will help.

Crime is out of control and the police are understaffed, underpaid and demoralised.
On a positive note I think many of the Police Stations are coming out of the stasis period and things are changes for the better, albeit slowly.

um.. corruption maby, but I dont know if they let loose crime. Maby letting our borders so loose helped crime, but it was a bit inevitable.

Nothing agains Nadine Gordimer

But we mustn't forget that this happens to people every day in this country. We need to stop waiting for the "important" people to be affected before something is done. I wonder how things would be if our police comissioner or our esteemed public servants were affected more directly more often...
I guess by we I am referring to those public servants who have the direct ability to affect our law, policing capabilities and budgets, etc. etc.

Once again, certainly something needs to be done in Nadine's case without forgetting about those who can't afford decent security.

Sad reality of living in SA. Unfortunately the ANC is to busy changing names to worry about petty stuff like violent crime.....

Short answer is that the previous regime made it a border that foreign africans didn't want to cross. ;)

The ANC is completely responsible for the crime in the country. It was their doctrine to make the country ungovernable before they took over. The people got used to using violence to get what they wanted and then could not stop. When the ANC got the reigns of power they inherited what they had started.

Coupled with their corruption and their ridiculous leadership, the crime is made even worse.

This is why SA will become another Zimbabwe in a few more years.

Okay, I do see what you mean there.

But honestly, the simplicity of whites/privileged having everything VS the poor having nothing = crime.
But perhaps the violence can be attributed to what you say..

Crime also has a lot more to do with government and policing(justice system) than with people being poor. If the government and police(justice system) are effective then crime is low.

If the government and police(justice system) are criminals themselves then crime is rampant.

I aways maintain that the poor will always be with us and that there are many poor people who are wonderful people, just as there are a lot of rich people who are good. Unfortunately for South Africa, the corrupt government and the inept and corrupt justice sytem offer no solution.

Gordimer was the latest statistic of this.

Didn't someone interview like 5 or 6 of South Africas top writers and wasnt Gordimer the only one that was positive about the road South Africa is going down?

I vote a trans border national park running the wodth of our northern neighbours with many more free range lions, crocs, etc etc... At least they can't be charged with "human rights abuse"... but then again, who can begrudge a Zimbabwean fleeing that place??

why do so many ppl assume that foreigners are to blame? not only in this case, but others too. it's a cop-out. we all know about the nigerian drug-dealers in hillbrow, bla bla bla... but most crime in SA is committed by locals.

True just look at India or Botswana where crime is totally out of control because of poverty:rolleyes:

Yes, even now she has sympathy with her attackers, such a great woman.

--

Describing her ordeal, she said that one of the men had grabbed her and had his arm across her body.

"It was a muscular, smooth arm and I thought: 'Shouldn't there be a better use for these hands, this arm, than robbing an old woman?'
