Carrot (subsidies) and stick (loadshedding) approach.

Far too many sticks and too few carrots currently...

South Africa now needs at least 10 GW of consistent new generation capacity just to avoid burning diesel and allow space for a handful of generators to shut down for extended refurbishment maintenance. This is to avoid Stage 6 (domestic) and Stage 4 load-curtailment and another 2000MW reserve capacity.

ANC has given up - they are just focused on the next election. They recon the private sector will provide their own power and the money for Eskom is already well over drawn.

10GW is equivalent to 40 000MW solar + 30 000MW battery, or 30 000MW wind or a combination.

Load-shedding can be stopped in two years — why government’s plan to fix Eskom is bad

South Africa could stop load-shedding in a shorter time than forecasted in the government's latest plan to address the country's energy crisis by relying more on rooftop solar adoption.

That is according to energy expert and EE Business Intelligence managing director Chris Yelland.
They fixed it with the flick of a switch over Christmas / new year, and turned it back on when they got back from holidays.. It's just another tenderpreneur money making scam.. I don't believe a word..

Holidays = lower demand?

Even if you had the money and skills to create new centralized base load the ship has sailed.

Local grids are over capacity and collapsing due to theft and maintenance issues on a municipal level... I don't even look at the schedule anymore. I just assume it's either an outage or a load-shedding schedule with a 50/50 chance of the power coming back. I'm not going to go off-grid, but the planning, saving and budgeting to do it eventually has already started.

Even IPP wind and solar farms are going to be useless if you live too far away or you're on a grid that's dependent on these troglodytes to maintain it.

Localized renewables and focusing on efficiency is now the only way out for the home and small business sector... as for big industrial energy supply, well good luck with that. They should have focused on that with what little resources they have left... the rest should have gone to massive tax breaks and/or subsidies for rooftop solar.

Will never happen though. It's harder to steal small pickings from a spiderweb than to scoop from a piggy trough.
You're on your own.

High time government rolled out free meters to buy back from consumers. Forking out over R10 000 for a meter so I can "earn" 50c a Kwh is useless. So I have a potential 3Kw of power right now going to waste while my batteries are full and I am at work.
Short-sightedness from ANC does not even enter the party here.
