Government hits pause on rollout of AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine

Health Minister Zweli Mkhize has announced that the rollout of the first COVID-19 vaccines to arrive in South Africa has been temporarily halted.

This decision was taken after the completion of AstraZeneca vaccine trials conducted by the University of the Witwatersrand as part of a study by Oxford University.

Researchers discovered that the AstraZeneca vaccines which arrived in South Africa last week are minimally effective against the South African variant of the coronavirus.

I suppose it would be more expensive to have it transported back so may as well use it?

Eventhough the efficacy of the J&J is less i prefer the old/previous vaccine type.

So: Since it looks like no vaccine is coming in the next 6 months, what of all the money spent by the ANC to "prepare" for the vaccine rollout?

Excellent work ANC - buy the vaccines, have them delivered, stored etc. and then afterwards decide you're not giving them to anybody.

My vote is they're all gone already and this is just an excuse.

And yet Alan Winde of the Western Cape, was advised of this and saw this coming. So he has initiated WC funding to get the right vaccine down here.
Queue the ANC/EFF vitriol of "The WC is racist" and "The WC is not following the mandate of National Government", etc, etc, yadda, yadda.

According to John Campbell, reports on the ineffectiveness of the AZ vaccine against the South African variant, have been greatly exaggerated in the popular press.
well media is in the business of selling bad news .... maybe those that jump on everything they push out, to just take a couple of minutes to compose themselves and not add to the shitfest...first it was the delay in getting orders placed, than it was there was no money, than .... and people go crazy , each time....media is pulling the willing into whatever madness they construct... stop being pulled.

Truth is often missing in a fast changing environment, but it can expose fallacies in strategy. IMO using the vaccine first on healthcare workers is misguided, and based on logistics rather than benefits. Perhaps this pause will encourage a more rational use of resources.
