Try and understand that the road makes no difference. The first principle of the road traffic act in SA is to keep left and pass right.

I'd use the pavement if it wasn't for all the cars parked on it! Times are changing, aside from people who have to walk, more and more people are choosing to walk and ride bikes, and roads are no longer exclusively for cars, we need to share and make roads safe for everyone. I honestly don't see the problem with slowing down in urban environments.

Actually it makes perfect sense.
If you tell people they must drive 30 then they will drive 60 :thumbsup:

The government should drop the speed limit in South Africa’s urban areas to help reduce the large number of pedestrian fatalities.

This is according to Open Streets urban designer Kirsten Wilkins, who recently spoke about pedestrian safety in the country on CapeTalk. The discussion followed the release of government’s Easter traffic statistics.

There were 235 fatalities on South Africa’s roads during the 2021 Easter period, of which around 35% were pedestrians.
Government must first ENFORCE compliance to basic road signs such as a Stop street, before attempting to reduce any speed limits...
Over the last decade or so, a Stop sign has completely lost its efficacy. Nobody Stops anymore?

What percentage of pedestrians that died where busy jawalking or standing in the middle of the road drunk?

If they are mostly dying on the pavement people would perhaps be willing to consider this.

learn pedestrians not to be like sheep. why do we have pedestrian crossings all over our roads? Keep them from the highways.

Here's the reality. Traffic is a complex system.

Like ALL complex systems, it relies on flow. The speed is the least interesting part of the system.

Everything you do to impede flow introduces risk of failure.

Instead of focusing on the flow, we're focusing on introducing risk of failure. Making traffic flows cross each other. Forcing oversized, overweight, logistics vehicles to share the same routes as commuter vehicles. Roadblocks. Speed traps that see idiots slam on brakes even though they're *already* well below the limit. Douche-nozzle drivers who have appointed themselves the final arbiter of what speed everyone should be following.

All of it aimed at killing humans.

Then we whine about how people are dying. Because mouth-breathing farkwits keep pointing to a clearly criminal addiction to monetising speed as if it somehow beats reality. Pro tip, it does not.

Quit obstructing the free-flow of traffic and you *will* save lives.

For the record, pedestrians are very much an obstruction.

Forgot to mention... if you imagine the rush-hour crunch is bad now, with the direct transition to 60 in urban offramps, can you imagine how many will die when this is 30? Or do we imagine every road lives in isolation of all others?

Strange that the solution to the problem is to reduce the speed limit that most ignore anyway.

In addition, most SA drivers ignore stop signs, yield signs, pedestrian crossings, etc. as well.
People aren't obeying the rules, let's make more rules.

educate the pedestrian first! like don't cross the road unless at a robot or pedestrian crossing - dumbass!

I can't recall how many times I seen people walking / jogging on the road with a perfectly paved unobstructed empty pavement. :unsure::X3:
People dont obey laws in SA, jaywalking is still illegal and yet it happens right in front of traffic police with no f's given.
Drive around anywhere and you will see people walking in the street with perfect pavements right next to them, the pedestrians dont want help.

Zoning laws and poor city planning are the cause of these fatalities.

The problem in South Africa is that you need to get in your car or a taxi and drive 5-10km to buy a loaf of bread. Most other countries have local bakeries, green grocers and other commercial businesses located within residential areas. Dense urban areas should be free of vehicles and designed for walking or cycling.

South Africans have an obsession with cars that we need to move away from.

I agree that this is what is what is taught in a driver’s test - but there has to be a leniency to this rule.

Hear me out. On the highway, definitely apply this rule. I hate people who feel entitled to sit on the fast lane just because they’re doing 119km/h in a 120km/h zone. “You wanna pass me? No! Doing so means you’re above the speed limit. Sit yo ass back down”

But on multi-lane regional and city roads, there often is a right-turn up ahead. A right-turn that you need to take. For this reason, you have to be on the right lane - even though there might be faster moving traffic on the left.
