If only that would make a difference.

The solution is pavements everywhere and stiff fines for jay walking.
Lol this isn’t the US. South Africa is similar to UK law in terms of jaywalking. This means that this term, i.e. jaywalking, does not legally exist in SA. Pedestrians can cross wherever they please (even on a red robot) if they deem it safe to do so.

It is only illegal for them to be on a road or cross that road if there is a sign explicitly stating that, such as on highways.

A red pedestrian robot is legally speaking only a recommendation. Maybe unconventional by US standards but it works nonetheless.

So no, there will most likely be no ‘stiff fines’ introduced.

Yup though you shouldn't have trucks doing 60 in the second lane or 80 in the 3rd lane, once they've passed they should move back. But driving to Samrand last week showed me this isn't the way it goes.
I ended up remaining at 120 by weaving as it was the only way.
Oh this is fun, van Reenens Pass 2 lanes one truck moving over to overtake another truck at 20km/h in the fast lane

how so? Surely being hit by a car travelling at 1km/h is likely to do less damage than being hit by a car travelling at 6-km/h? Likewise, for 30km/h vs 60km/h

So you're ok with the speed limit to be reduced to 30km/h?

How about pedestrians wake the fvck up?

Walk in the middle of the road when there are 2m of paved sidewalk on either side and proceed to stare you down.
Not checking if it is clear when stepping off the curb. Bonus points when they have earphones in or are fixated on their phones.
Jaywalking between parked cars so you see them at the last minute.
Not knowing the difference between a green man, a red man and a flashing red man.

I have fantasies of Carmageddon everyday when I have to play dodgems with pedestrians. Imbeciles.

Idiot's cunning plan is to have cars not move at all.

Pretending meat-bags blundering around in traffic is NOT the problem *is* the problem.

The correct strategy is a functioning, effective and affordable public transport system.

Her basic premise isn't entirely off the mark, 60km/h in many residential areas is too fast in general. 30km/h is a bit on the extreme side in my opinion though.

BUT just reducing the speed limit is not enough, more has to be done around general road traffic law enforcement as well as pedestrian safety education to get the fsckers to stay out of the middle of the damn road and also to be aware of when to cross etc etc...

Another contributing factor besides half asleep pedestrians are South African motorists who's little brains cannot process that amber lights means you should probably stop and red actually means stop.

No.

Pedestrians are not encased in a tonne of metal. Mixing pedestrians and a tonne of moving metal will ALWAYS FAIL. Stop mixing pedestrians with traffic.

Sidewalks, bridges and public transport. Everything else is delusional BS.

I would take it further. Want to reduce road deaths? Stop mixing commuter and logistics traffic. The speed variability and mass differentials guarantee deaths.
