Government outlines laws on hiring of foreigners

Amid the continued clampdown by government officials on employers who are non-compliant with various South African laws, the department of employment and labour (DEL) this week outlined myriad procedures that businesses hiring local and foreign nationals should follow.

DEL spokesperson Mishack Magakwe, who has confirmed that various local businesses were to be targeted for inspection “from time to time”, said it was “important for an employer who has a vacant post to advertise it in the local media – newspaper or online”.

Explained Magakwe: “The local citizens then get first chance to take up that employment opportunity by submitting their applications for the post to the employer.

“If the employer finds suitable candidates for the post, he then hires from the local pool of applications and the matter is closed.”

Yet another unjust and immoral regulation. Who people employ is no business of the government. It's precisely this sort of interference that's killing the economy. How did these politicians arrogate to themselves the power to tell others who they may and may not employ? It's a bloody disgrace.

Yeah. Most countries do it now. We live in a time of massive State expansion and intrusion.

Involving the DEL in the hiring process will stymie growth though. Government departments are inefficient at the best of times, and private companies can't absorb that inefficiency into their hiring process.

I believe in a free market, cheap labour makes us more competitive and help our economy grow. Everyone will benefit from a growing economy.

Government should not tell a private business who they can and can not employ. One of these days they going to force you to employ according the race of a person, oh wait....

To grow the economy you need employees to earn and in turn spend. Cheap labour only enriches the business owners. No use having people working 12 hours shifts and taking home R 2500 a month. That doesn't grow no economy...

If locals and foreigners are equaly skilled, trained , educated and have the same work ethics, the law makes sense.

However the reality in S.A. is that often the foreigner has more qualities to offer than the local.

don't worry. no matter you are low skill / no kill, the anc government will put you to the top position such as SOEs' CEO, top government officials such as minister or even be the president. you have the power to turn the economy around as what CR said.
