Government partnering with Telkom to improve South Africa's broadband coverage

Telkom SA SOC Ltd. and the South African government are in advanced talks to partner in rolling out broadband products even as buyers flock to bid for the telecommunication company’s assets.

The partnership will involve Telkom’s businesses such as the Openserve fibre unit, the government’s Broadband Infraco SOC and broadcast transmission services provider Sentech SOC Ltd., Minister of Communications and Digital Technologies Mondli Gungubele said.

Telkom actually has decent broadband infrastructure. The government helping it roll even more out might trigger some alarms at the competition commission.

If government has any part of it, it will either never happen, or fail miserably.
