Government plans to cut rail funding to bail out failing e-tolls

Government has proposed a bill to reallocate funds meant to aid the struggling Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa) to bail out Sanral's failing e-toll system, the City Press reports.

Prasa controls the major Metrorail and Shosholoza Meyl rail systems, which both cater to poor urban commuters and are in dire need of improvement.

Seems it's easier to throw money at it than cut your losses while you can

Furk up one system by destroying it to get another unnecessary one running which will fail anyway.

I guess someone must be getting a nice kick back from austria if sending money to them and letting prasa burn is the solution.. :giggle:

SANRAL is actually owed nothing by motorists because it is an illegal system.

It's time to privatise the railways anyway. Nothing is going to improve with trains so long as they are controlled and run by the government.

As I said before.. money for eToll has to come from somewhere if people don’t pay.. guess the passengers of trains can blame Gauteng road users.

When the trains derail, as they still do in SA, who will be paying for that? Oh yes, SA incl Gauteng road users..

The socialist "poor first" ANC is bailing out foreign investors in an unwanted system over fixing the railway.

No they must blame the ANC for implementing the scam called eToll.

Worth reading Wayne Duvenage from OUTA on the ongoing failure of e-tolls, and the history of bad decisions: https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/opinionista/2019-07-07-the-e-toll-impasse-square-pegs-round-holes-and-ostrich-mentality/
Claims by Finance Minister Tito Mboweni and a handful of others that the e-toll scheme should remain in place indicates a lack of comprehension as to why the scheme has failed to achieve its purpose of financing the Gauteng Freeway Improvement Project bond.
