Government promises ‘affordable’ nuclear for South Africa

What are trying to be funny on a Monday?

Anything ANC Government has done so far cost triple the budget and get delayed after delayed and costs get past to Tax payers.

Unpopular opinion - Nuclear is the right way to go, we have the minerals and can do enrichment locally.

We do however also have vast tracts of desert that can do solar and wind etc as well.

Whats the life left on Koeberg anyway?

“The question is, what do we do going forward? Of course, we need to look at the next wave of [BBBEE]…where there are lessons to be learnt, we take those lessons into account and where there are greater opportunities to be introduced, we need to be able to introduce those.
WTF does that even mean?

Man oh man we sure do **** around in this country

Government introducing new ballooning costs left right and centre. Can't cover the current spend... tells us we will get affordable nuclear.

We can't afford to supply water in some munis... let alone nuclear power.

We also have the right expertise.

All the SA government needs to do is procure multiple units of the same design and spread them around the country, and the price per MWH into the grid plummets.

Reality is that SA needs cheap electricity. Renewables like solar and wind cannot be cheap. Nuclear can. SA cannot afford the high electricity prices we are paying at the moment.

How are there literally billions available for renewables but when nuclear enters the room, it is suddenly unaffordable because reasons?

Chernobyl anyone?

Oh no!
According to the official, internationally recognised death toll, just 31 people died as an immediate result of Chernobyl while the UN estimates that only 50 deaths can be directly attributed to the disaster. In 2005, it predicted a further 4,000 might eventually die as a result of the radiation exposure.

Anyway:
Previous studies have modeled the annual number of deaths caused by pollution from the state power company, Eskom Holdings, at more than 2 000 a year, while the utility’s own research puts the death toll at 330.

Coal power kills 2000 people a year. But muh nuclear. And I might add that when countries "embrace" renewables, like Germany, they end up just burning more coal.

You wanna rile up those few who think it is

Don't get me wrong. I want more nuclear.

It's just difficult to build a nuclear power station for low incremental costs. It requires a large capital project. That's where this government excels at making money go missing.

With things like wind and solar you can expand in a modular fashion with lower individual project costs and less opportunity for these rats to steal the cheese.

A less corrupt and obviously inept government and I'd be on board with nuclear. Heck I'm still largely on board with nuclear, I just have serious reservations about the theft possibility.

Right now, rooftop solar is only somewhat a good decision because of Eskom's retardation and corruption.

If Eskom ran a nuclear grid, prices would actually be able to drop back into line with CPI.

This is what the renewable retards always miss out. If SA can execute on a successful nuclear build, electricity prices can actually drop. Which means everyone can get richer.

The nuclear plans being tabled are of the modular type. The era of building a big-ass plant that takes a decade is over. These modular reactors go online within 3 years and they build several at a time.
