Government quiet about delays to South Africa's new driving licence card project

Will we be able to store it on Google Wallet or the Apple version?

I for one don't really even understand why our ID cards are referred to as "Smart ID" .... What is so smart about them? It is not like they have a chip in them that can be scanned by NFC or anything? Only plus about the card is it is easy to keep in your wallet compared to the old ID book. Other than that what difference does it make.
lolz

Not for many many many years, this is SA.

Such witchcraft takes a while to implement.

It will also have to be internationally accepted.
Electronic license won't be for decades to come. If you need that you can get a physical one.

This is from 2013:
There should be an NFC chip in it.

Why have any card at all, electronic or physical? Just give the cop your ID number, he looks it up on a phone/tablet, and all your details and photo are right there for him to see.

"Renewing" your license is then just a matter of going to an optometrist and doing an eye test, and the optometrist uploads the results to the system and voilá, your license is renewed.

This way you can't forget your license at home, or have to carry phone to produce an electronic copy. There is no expensive printing machine that needs to be bought and maintained (lol). You don't have to travel to a license department twice to renew your license. There is less strain on the traffic department because people don't have to queue to renew the license etc.

Of course, with SITA in charge, I can just see cops not being able to check your details because "the system is down".
Agree Fully.
BTW, were optometrists not already meant to upload your eye tests to the system since more than a year back?

Followup from 2017 confirms there is
“Many people [including Ockie] don’t think Home Affairs [implemented a Smart ID card] because you can’t see the chip, but it’s actually a contactless chip,” said Maherry.

Why can’t we just have something that can be stored on our Google / Apple wallet. So frustrating as I don’t carry a wallet with me and refuse to do so just for one card.

If we going to move forward, why don’t we just get with times like some other countries.

In the UK you don’t need to even do that. Cops can just check at the roadside on their system if you have a license and if it’s valid.

Interesting. Thanks. Have not seen a use case for it. Go to the bank and they just want to see it or make copies of it etc. No readers for it that I have ever seen.
Have there been a use case for the barcode? I've never seen anyone scan one.
