They did it with the SABC and honestly I havent watched SABC in 6 years now. Same with the new Telkom Streaming service. Honestly nothing I want to watch on there.

How are you going to force Netflix, Disney, Hulu and HBO to have 30% local content. Personally I would just go back to a website and charge the clients US dollars and dont target South Africa but leave it as american market. And whoever wants to subscribe may.

What are they planning to do next, demand that 30% of the Porn industry only shows local content?

Depends on what they classify as local. Black Flag was filmed in Cape Town. Does that mean it is local content?

They're not available in SA, Netflix is, for now.

I hope to put in a filter to remove it from my content completely. Otherwise it just fills up your searches with nonsense.

Its one thing I do wish Netflix would offer, the ability to filter out certain content. Especially the Indian content currently is my bug bear when you are trawling the "New" stuff. Second on the list would be the Chinese content, some of it is good but a fair chunk of it is very mediocre at best.

This is crazy - Netflix will just further reduce the few movies we get to see in SA to that the 30% quota exists. Does Gov realise how much money Netflix already spends in shooting movies in South African locations? My wife survives off that income as an extra. They probably spend more than SABC does (and at least they pay).

I use Showmax if Im in the mood for local content. Really, variety please.

Breaking news: DSTV in ties with government to push international streaming services out of the country. (wouldn't be surprised if this was true, with the current culture of corruption)

They have no idea about anything. They are all about what sounds good to unions and voter base.

if the bribe is big enough they will release it on SABC even,
but netflix probably knows better.

Netflix seem to make local content in many countries, so it would be unwise to chase them away. They're actually capable of putting a relatively large amount of money into South Africa's film and television production. Something the effectively defunct SABC can no longer do.

I wonder if Netflix license anything based on how much it gets watched. Something like the way radio stations pay for playing music. Then they can fill the quota and if no-one watches it pay nothing.

Mind you guys, the EU has the same 30% quota for streaming services.
They also probably produce a lot more overall.

Its not all dog crap that we have here.
There are occasional pieces of quality, but a lot of it is stuff that even dog crap wouldn't watch.

Yes but you also must take size of EU production, it is easy for them to acquire 30% local content and actually what their subscribers would like to watch.
