Government reaffirms 30% Netflix local content quota

Its not all dog crap that we have here.
I respectfully disagree. We do have good local content, but it is NOT produced by the government/sabc. There are private production companies that have made some really awesome movies and series. The BIG but is, that that content is taste-specific. Think of movies like Anna Hoekom for example, and in the 90s there was a series about the Tokoloshe, I understood nothing, but I watched it every day with a friend. So ja, 30% quote will never be filled by the SABC, they do not have enough money or people to fill that quota. I wonder how many production companies are still prepared to produce any content for them?

Our country is not talentless, we have a country full of artists, songwriters, singers, dancers, comedians, actors/resses, DJs etc. Nevermind the theatre community. I have seen plays in four different countries, South African production on theatre, came out top for me personally, even in the smallest theatres like the NGO Playhouse theatre here in Somerset West.

I just think the government should NEVER be in the business of making a profit. The government is there to protect our rights and to serve the public. Allow the private sector to thrive. Not monopolies. We need healthy competition. DSTV needs competition. If it wasn't for supersport, I wouldn't bother with DSTV. They are just as useless.

So they going to force Netflix to show at least 30% crap?
Actually they should just do it because the local content will sit there unnoticed because no one will care about it.

if the sabc could do its job, this would not be an issue.

still incapable of doing its job, it is trying to make others do its job for it.

If they have to reduce their catalog to meet the quota, then its going to be bad. VPN sales will go up.

If they dont have to reduce their catalog to meet the quota then I dont really care.

I do think VPNs are going to become more popular.

They want to force feed us on the dribble that is SA "content"...one of the main reasons why people get Netflix is to not watch that crap.

Aaand SABC is free as well...
To the people with braaigrids for antennas that vote ANC yes
But to people like me that have a big ass flat screen telly nailed to a lounge mortar wall to view Netflix, Youtube, Pornhub etc it should be a given right to view what you wanna, but SABC will keep trying to nail the 'minor ethnic group' for money so that they do not upset their 'majority ethnic peoples' who vote ANC ;)

It's just a bully tactic and that's all, guess what? I'm not falling for it :D

The 30% local content quota is just so that government can then apply their African logic and enforce the requirement for a need to own a TV license to use Netflix.

Isn't the SABC's existence not based on being a broadcaster of local content?

Forcing other entities to do the SABC's job will likely result in the SABC relegating itself to pointlessness (although I believe that has been the case ever since Hlaudi was allowed into the SABC).
