I respectfully disagree. We do have good local content, but it is NOT produced by the government/sabc. There are private production companies that have made some really awesome movies and series. The BIG but is, that that content is taste-specific. Think of movies like Anna Hoekom for example, and in the 90s there was a series about the Tokoloshe, I understood nothing, but I watched it every day with a friend. So ja, 30% quote will never be filled by the SABC, they do not have enough money or people to fill that quota. I wonder how many production companies are still prepared to produce any content for them? Its not all dog crap that we have here.
Our country is not talentless, we have a country full of artists, songwriters, singers, dancers, comedians, actors/resses, DJs etc. Nevermind the theatre community. I have seen plays in four different countries, South African production on theatre, came out top for me personally, even in the smallest theatres like the NGO Playhouse theatre here in Somerset West.
I just think the government should NEVER be in the business of making a profit. The government is there to protect our rights and to serve the public. Allow the private sector to thrive. Not monopolies. We need healthy competition. DSTV needs competition. If it wasn't for supersport, I wouldn't bother with DSTV. They are just as useless.
