The South African government is going to spend an estimated R25-million in their court battle against the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF)‚ where they are defending 800-meter world and Olympic champion Caster Semenya.

Minister of Sport Tokozile Xasa and her director-general Alec Moemi confirmed on Friday that the government is footing the bill for the assembly of a powerful team of local and international experts.

They will lead Semenya’s case at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAA) in Zurich from Monday.

Semenya is challenging the proposed rule amendment by the IAAF that seeks to restrict the levels of testosterone in female athletes.

Xasa said they are confident of success at CAS because they have assembled top medical and legal experts from South Africa and around the world.

“The case‚ which starts on Monday‚ needed resourcing but we have a full team there to put the case together‚” Xasa said‚ adding that their efforts have been endorsed and supported by President Cyril Ramaphosa.

Let's see, how many school pit toilets can we replace with real toilets for R25 million, nah let's spend it on Caster instead.
She's a citizen of South Africa - If we can't spend money defending our citizens against unfair discrimination then wth. It's not one or the other. We can both defend our citizens and build toilets. Defending her is not the problem here. It's where money is wasted on politicians and corruption that is the problem.

Given existing cost structures.... we could only have built 47 pit toilers... so not many real toilets then :(

You cant go against nature, it's proven that testerone increases your performance/muscle mass etc. In other words she is on steroids competing against non-steroid atheletes. Is that fair to you?

I don't really have an opinion yet.

It is apparently inconclusive that testosterone provides a competitive advantage.

Having longer legs has proven to increase speed for runners. Is it fair that long legged athletes get to compete against athletes with only average length legs? Michael Phelps has a proportionally longer “wingspan than his competitors, is double jointed and has size 14 feet. Is it fair for him to compete against swimmers who don't have these biological advantages?

Physical traits vs Biological make-up. Two different sides of the same coin.

You can't compare physical traits to that of Biological make-up which does ensure an advantage in things like endurance and strength.
