Its not the end of the world, pay DHL 2M and get the vaccines, or pay SAA 5M, get the vaccines, and at the same time give them a little bit of cash to pay salaries

It's better than the regular multi billion rand bailouts that come with nothing

It's not gonna come remotely close to R2M with a courier.

It's absolute idiocy to think that something so highly sort after like vaccines should be brought in by a third party courier service and that said these delivery runs by SAA are basically government handouts to them, the most sensible thing to do is send in military cargo planes to fetch the vaccines but then again there was that entire fridge incident.

God this country is incompetent

The plane will not be empty...I'm certain that government personnel will be on board to attend a meeting or other overseas. And then get presidential permission for the trip on their return to SA! WTF...Where's The Flight!

4- 5 cabin crew for 2 pilots, definitely more to the story than simple fetch and return

Perhaps next time they will send the vaccines in economy class instead...

So we need to send a plane to collect it? Maybe just put it on a ship and get it 2 months after expiry. Seriously spending R5 million to fetch something costing lots more is a no brainer.

But perhaps we can drop off some alcohol for them too. Or other goods. Wait then we have to sanitize the plane again.

Stupid article really.

Its like complaining about flying to JHB to pickup your new Ferrari. Why fly? Just leave it in Jhb. No need to ever get it.

The arrogance displayed by Jamnadas for this little publicity stunt is just staggering, not to mention his complete disconnect from reality and from the people who actually pay the taxes that he feels it is his prerogative to squander on such a crass waste of money.

Whoever authorised this should be hauled before Parliament to account for the decision and be prosecuted for wasteful and fruitless expenditure.

It makes me physically sick to think that the money I just recently paid over to SARS for provisional tax has been squandered by the ego of that fat pharmacist sitting in the DPE ministerial office.

The only consolation here is the hope that even cANCer votahs are beginning to see through the charade and will start questioning the utter waste of taxes on such vanity projects like SAA v2.

Are you serious? TUI makes daily cargo flights to South Africa from Belgium and have delivered previous batches of the vaccine at minimal cost compared to the utter waste of sending an empty A340 to collect a couple of pallets at a cost of R5m.

The first batch of J&J vaccines were delivered by a TUI cargo flight. SAA tried to fetch it, but were grounded by the CAA because the pilots were not certified. Probably determined to show who's boss the second time...

Those calculations though. We get that a point has to be made, but this is over exaggeration. With these calculations, even with paying passengers on a full flight return you would not turn a profit

I have an idea. Instead of sending empty planes, they can fill it up with talented people on mybb that have no jobs and only thing they do is to pay taxes. Brussels gets high end migrants and plane cost is recovered. Win win.

Okay, I get the concerns/ complaints but what solutions were provided on the matter by the complaining or concerned party, and what are the cost implications of that solutions?

Seems it is easier to complain than offer plan B.
yes... people like to moan.

What would be worse for me is if they tried to co-ordinate this with a commercial flight and there was a stuff up around timing or contamination.

Its not like there are many that can travel at the moment.

The flight was initially set to depart on Sunday, but was grounded for a few days as it was not up to global aviation standards.

The vaccines would have been here already and at a cheaper cost if they simply used one of the other available options...

There are multiple commercial flights every day into SA.

The SAA flight was already delayed due to certification issues...

Yes, people should not question this at all else we gonna go off on some unrelated tangent...
