Yes, people should not question this at all else we gonna go off on some unrelated tangent...
LOL - take it easy bra. Just coz you can't be on that plane and I can be... ;-)

p.s. This is waste of money.

yes... people like to moan.

What would be worse for me is if they tried to co-ordinate this with a commercial flight and there was a stuff up around timing or contamination.

Its not like there are many that can travel at the moment.
Have you even read the article or followed the news? There are multiple cargo flights daily into the country.

“The only thing I can think of is that this is a photo opportunity or a publicity stunt,” he said.

Nailed it

It doesn't say that at all.

There is, however, a much cheaper option, which has been used before.

“You can get a lot more vaccines into the belly space of a commercial aircraft that is flying to South Africa with passengers,” he said.

My comment stands.

Maybe they had other cargo to pick up. Don't we print our notes in Germany?

Only in SA, do we send an empty 340-600 to fetch some cargo when there are more cost effective ways to get the job done. TISA. IMG-20210225-WA0012.jpg

Not necessarily but those who do can afford it. We unfortunately do not have financial muscle of those countries so...

I think there's other classified cargo they're fetching under the guise of the vaccines.

I'm not surprised - makes it clear why they have run the SOE into the ground. At least Vusi and crew got to claim S&T and overtime. What a circus.

It's not gonna come remotely close to R2M with a courier.
Yo, but the extra charges for all the ministers spouses and baggage that went shopping escorted it as a guard of honour would have been a killer.

The TUI that delivered the first batch was a charter from Brussels using a B787-8. It's also in a passenger configuration and usually does low cost long haul to Caribbean etc.

Ethiopian Cargo flies here at least 3xweekly with a B777-F freighter. 1 pallet on this flight would have been a lot cheaper. Other cargo options are KLM Cargo, at least 5x weekly or Turkish Cargo 3x weekly.

5bar could have got us quite a few more vaccines than the expensive SAA dog 'n pony show!

R5million? That's only an additional 30,000 doses of the vaccine or renaming 1/2 a city... Who needs it.

They're picking up "other cargo" as well.

That adds 63 rands cost to a single shot if it is 80000 vaccines. Plane could be worthwhile if they get 5 million in one go.

Ethiopian have done 2 Brussels Johannesburg flights in the last week, and have 2 more scheduled in the next week. They may even have some others under a different flight number:

The SAA A340 still appears to be on the ground in Brussels:
