Government whitepaper describes the plan to make major DStv sports free to watch

The Department of Communications and Digital Technologies has proposed new rules which would force DStv to make certain sports free-to-air to address the public interest.

This is already in place to an extent, and the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa recently began a review of the country's broadcasting regulations which would redefine the criteria for this requirement.

Why do you say they are double dipping?
Money from government, sponsors and then broadcasting rights. So sorry, it's really triple dipping. The real issue is the sports and not the broadcasters.

FTFY

I see where you are going although I wouldn't go so far as to say double or triple dipping, I will admit I don't know the numbers in terms of what they need, what they make, etc.

Only way I see this working for DSTV is with a delayed live scenario. Government should rather focus on making all retailers provide free bread, you know - like something one can actually eat :p

Delayed scenario yes.

Dept is a bit slow however. S15 doesnt exist anymore. I suspect this is one of the products most paying dstv subs watched sport wise.

Not that I care much about DSTV, but since when can government "make" a company provide its products for free?Seems like a slippery slope, and I suspect that where it's not profitable, DSTV just won't bother with the events.
Multichoice and Naspers never seemed to mind when the government did the same thing to the water supply, BEE, the mines and farmers.

Now the shoe is on the other foot.

90% of corporate SA's leadership could drown in a vat of period blood and I couldn't care less.

The ANC plays a balance of power game, if you meet them with serious resistance, like the type that corporates can actually put up, they back down.

Land yesterday, sports rights today ...................... who knows what they want to steal legally tomorrow.

Keys for the car still about?
