The TV licence is already dead

The Organisation Undoing Tax Abuse (Outa) says South Africa’s TV licence system has already failed, and waiting years to change the SABC’s funding model could create huge financial problems for the public broadcaster.

“The SABC is owed R44 billion in TV license fees, a massive financial hole that successive ministers have failed to address,” Outa stated.

For example, the national and provincial legislatures could provide some funding in the furtherance of democracy.”
Van Heerden said these institutions manage to provide hundreds of millions of rand to political parties to support democracy.

Democracy.

You could take R20 a month off everyone's SASSA grant to fund this.

Its the right thing to do.

Especially the dead ones ... win-win

These assclowns are still harassing me 27 years later to pay even though in 1997 I gave then a cancellation letter from Teljoy of a TV I had rented. My then wife took out a TV licence when she bought a TV.
I sent the same cancellation letter from Teljoy a few years later. But they carry on and it reached a point I told them to sod off because they cannot prove how long I haven't had a TV. They left me alone for many years but occasionally some or other lawyer firm tries their luck.

Wonder how much money someone at SABC gets as a kick back for "debt collection" services. I am sure these services cost the SABC more money, than they earn via TV lisences, or that they actually do "recover"

I think this has become part of a debt parcel that gets sold between different debt collection agencies. Then they set their minions to work to try recover debt. Over the years it has been about 4 different firms.

Urgh... This endless useless bs around the SABC - Is way worse than just letting it die. Half the plans they cook up will damage computer hardware sales even more. And all the potential benefit downstream from that industry. The other half will piss tax payers off even more.

Let it die. Give SAns peace at least in this regard. It's time. FFS. Jeebus... Maybe a few people who for some obscure reason misses the SABC might even pick up and read a book or two as an alternative form of entertainment. That might raise our GDP by 400%!

Government departments don't even pay their dues, so neither will I. Just let it die.
