The poor speed that users in rural areas have is unacceptable if you look at the profits these "providers" put in their pockets. I've upgraded from a gprs phone to a E220 GPRS/EDGE/3G/HSDPA USB modem, and noticed the following; The options that i have;

Vodacom = EDGE
CELLC = EDGE (Vodacom Roaming)
MTN = GPRS
Virgin Mobile = (Vodacom Roaming) None (only a 619 error to offer)

It is October 2007 (in our area as well) and still no 3G/HSDPA!!!!!!!!!

Napier:

Vodacom = EDGE
CELLC = EDGE (Vodacom Roaming)
MTN = GPRS
Virgin Mobile = EDGE (Vodacom Roaming)

Latency on voda/cellc/virgin: anywhere between 3-15k
Mtn: 1-3k ave 1.5k

voda/cellc/virgin: 50% packet loss/timouts, absolutly terrible
mtn: pretty much constant & reliable, but at gprs speeds.

Is there anywhere one can see the planned rollout of those services in different areas?

@catweasel, that won't help you because they only promise and do not deliver. A guy from a local cell outlet told me we will have Vodacom 3G by the end Aug 07, nothing happened. Then it was for end Sept 07, i think we passed that already. I don't want to know anymore, because the next reply will be "end Oct"
