Can someone tell me if i've got this almost correct?

GPRS = up to 9kpbs download
EDGE = up to 30kpbs download
3G = up to 50kbps download
HSDPA = up to 180kbps download

Reason i'm asking is that i installed a Download Statusbar for Firefox - which can change colour according to what speeds your'e downloading at.

It's VERY nifty... but i'd like it to be a little more precise - cause i know my numbers are not 100% correct just yet !

Are you asking the "theoretic" speeds of those, or the "realistic" speeds? I also assume you are working in kiloBYTES per second there?

[In theory]
GPRS ~ 64kbps ~ 8 kBps
EDGE ~ 264kbps ~ 33 kBps
3G ~ 384kbps ~ 48 kBps
HSDPA ~ 1.8 Mbits ~ 225 kBps

[in Practice [what i get]]
GPRS ~ getting 5-8 kBps is likely
EDGE ~ No idea, haven't been able to clearly see when i'm on EDGE
3G ~ i get about 20 kBps
HSDPA ~ for a week [at launch] i got about 100 kBps , never picked it up again at those speeds. Now getting in the 60 kBps range

there have been times where it's almost seemed as if i'm capped at 29kbps..... and the modem was showing that it wasn't 3G/HSDPA - so i assumed that it was EDGE

29kbps = 3. 625kBps (devide by 8) ((8 bits in 1Byte))

Thus you had average to low normal (not Edge) GPRS connectivity.

In my area I get on average 200-260kBps, which is mostly at night between 19:00-21:00. Ps, I'm on VC...

My best sofar on MTN 3G in Somerset West is 35kBps (=280kbps) downloading speeds under tower upgrading conditions. Cluster must still be officially launched. Don't have modem to tap into the MTN's HSDPA network yet.

Lol you cant be getting such bad speeds, I get well over 200kbs on 3G!

200kbps sux major eggs for 3G! That's equal to 25KB per second. Not worth writing home about.

I get:

MTN EDGE - AVERAGE of 23KB on a Sunday morning (when everyone is gesuip or in church), 11KB in the week, 3KB when it goes pear shaped.

Can't get GPRS or HSDPA but Im pretty sure it'll fly on HSDPA once it's implemented in our area.

I get the up and downs. According to my DUMeter I sometimes get speeds up to 120KB/s. It all depends on what site I am visiting.

200kbs = 25 kBps . I said i'm getting about 20 kBps = 160 kbps. So it's not as bad as you think?

Plus i'm speaking in average here, obviously i've got 250kbps before, but also went as low as 50kbps at times....

Also keep in mind i get max 2 bars 3G reception [mostly 1 bar] . How much this influence speed i don't know.

for the people following this thread who might be confused:

8 bits in one Byte

bits are indicated by small letter b

Bytes are indicated by capital letter B

So for example, if you download a file at a download speed of say 30KBps, it translates to a download speed of 240Kbps (30 x 8)

So when you're look some spec in future, always check whether the "b" is small or capitol letter.

Use it, don't use it... :D

From Wikipedia
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kbps

A kilobit per second (kbit/s or kbps or kBaud) is a unit of data transfer rate equal to 1,000 bits per second. It is sometimes mistakenly thought to mean 1,024 bits per second, using the binary meaning of the kilo- prefix, though this is incorrect

Another unit of data transmission is the kilobyte per second (kbyte/s or kB/s or kBps), which is 1,000 or 1,024 bytes per second. Bytes are typically 8 bits in modern systems

I believe the best way is to use kbyte/s and kbit/s to make it clear what denomination you are using. But i've found in most official communication and terms they always use BITS [384 kBIT/s , 1.8 MBIT/s etc etc].

Between diabolus and Gecko, the kb and kB translation has now been totally PHARKED-UP for the those who were confused. :D :p ;)

why don't we all just talk about how fast we download....

u know... when you download a program you get a little thing saying your'e downloading at 5kbps.... or 30 ... or the fastest ever 180kbps (during the football worldcup final)that's like 1400kBps

I only get maximum 4 k/Bytes /sec on edge. (Definitely on edge, not GPRS). Same speed before our tower was edge. Where can the problem be?? No 3G available and not planned, so edge have to do. But NOT at that speed!!!

Hi MTNDD

Welcome back!

What typical speeds can one expect on MTN's network for:
GPRS:
EDGE:
3G:
HSDPA:

What benchmarks can we compare with?

Thanks

Typical speeds can one expect on MTN's network for:
GPRS: 30 to 40kbits
EDGE: 80 to 120kbits maxing at 236
3G: 220 to 320 maxing at 384
HSDPA: 400 to 700 maxing a 1.4 if we have one E1 link if we have two then 1.8

Hope that helps
