GPS advice

Howzit guys

I'm looking into buying my 1st GPS. It's mainly going to be used for everyday driving around town as well as for vacations ect.

I had a look at the Garmin 1300 and the Tom Tom XL thus far, both priced at around R2300 - 2400.

My budget is limited to about say R2500 max. I've read some reviews, but I'd like to get some first hand advice.

TomTom one XL is usually R1899, TomTom one is on special at Macro for R1299 - R1499, that's the one I have.

I would go for TomTom Garmin's routing is crap.

A friends Garmin couldn't find Meyer street in Pretoria and took us to 21st instead over the weekend.
The second attempt to reach a destination in Arcadia street ended up two blocks away from the required street number.

Interesting! My Garmin was incapable of finding Garmin Head Office in Umhlanga. Eventually I had to phone for directions, it took me to the wrong side of the Industrial area...then I tried finding the vet in Durban North, and it could only get me to a point two roads away, about 1 km as the crow flies, before it decided that I was there.....wobbly satellites over KZN??

Bought the TomTom One from game for R999, only one glitch so far travelling over Ou Kaapse Weg, it didnt pick up the Glencairn road to Simonstown from Fishhoek, and wanted to send me via Kommetjie, my GF's Nokia 5800 beat it on navigation.

What GPS did you use and what version of the mapset was installed? I found both these two addresses on my Nokia with Garmin Mobile XT (which in essence is almost the same interface on the Nuvi series of GPSs) with the lates 2009 South African Series map installed.

Maybe in both instances it was an ID ten T error? Good old logic should never replace a GPS!

Not so sure it is a case of being an idiot but rather a mapset issue. I have noticed that on the new 2009 maps my work address is D**a Rd instead of D**at Rd.... a simple mistake like that means not being able to find it.

I never search the full street address. It's best to enter the first couple of letters, so it can suggest the rest to you

Three letters coughs up a helluva lot of results!!!

tomtom Go 520 with the latest 8.35 Southern Africa. hasnt sent me on a wrong/crazy route before. The GO is rather expensive. but the TT XL looks rather solid. remember you get a free upgrade to the latest map once you have bought your tomtom.
cant speak about the garmins, but go for whatever you like. remember most navigation errors are silly mistakes we make, not so much the GPS

Get any Garmin and install your own software. Garmaps or T4A.

It was a Nuvi 712 with latest maps my friend had brought along from PE. I had my TomTom XL in the car too, to compare the two devices. No problem, TomTom dropped us directly in front of the premises on both occasions.

It wasn't a question of not finding the streets while setting it up, but directing us to the correct position. Meyer and Arcadia streets are of the oldest streets in PTA, so no excuse there.
