I heard there is a new gadget like a GPS receiver that you can put on your dash and a USB plug that goes into your laptop. Is this correct?
This is so much cheaper than the all in one like Garmin.
Any info about this?

no, you heard wrong.
there is no new gadget like this


it is an old gadget.

in fact, most gps receivers are either bluetooth (connect to the bluetooth on your laptop virtual com port)
or they are usb, like the bu-353...old stuff really. around £50
