Makhanda is in and Grahamstown is out; this is the official word from South Africa’s Arts and Culture Minister Nathi Mthethwa.

It’s taken just over three months for the historical Eastern Cape town to be officially renamed, following recommendations published in the Government Gazette in June in conjunction with the South African Geographical Names Council (SAGNC).

Despite a mass outcry from members of the public on social media, who labelled the name change unnecessary and wasteful, only 332 objections to the name change were received.

They can start by handing the keys of Rhodes University back seeing as they have no respect for the donor.

Does this mean crime will decrease and jobs will be created?

Queenstown has been renamed ages ago and nobody knows or cares about it. Grahamstown will be Grahamstown.

No.
You'll be told that they have a budget for these kinds of things.

As if we live in a country where conditions are such that government should even be allocating expenditure to **** like this while infrastructure falls apart and people aren't getting educated.

Careful you might lose your job for calling them that name... Rather use the Latin please.

It is the no.1 way to solve problems in this country. Attack public infrastructure if you are unhappy about something. Works 100% of the time.

A lot of children in public schools don't even go to school with lunch or have no books and such. Our Government sure has it's priorities upside-down.
