Hey all

I have a small graphic design studio, one of my clients wants to run a promotion with vouchers which use the same border as a US dollar bill. The layout is the same as a USD but pictures and text is changed (similar font for text).

Does anyone know the legalities of this..?

Last thing I want is the US treasury on my a*s for counterfeiting or some stupid copyright infringement hassles.

Also sure my client doesnt want to print them if they are not able to use them without getting into k*k.

Been googling and binging but cant find anything relevant which suggests either way...

Cheers for the advice

I could be wrong, but I think that in terms of SA Law you are not allowed to make a likeness of the currency of ANY country. Maybe somebody has more detail ?

I think you're missing "for printing and manufacture thereof" from that sentence as well. AFAIK there won't be any legalities to this, but the "money" should clearly state on the front/back that it's not valid currency.

Nope, AFAIK it's likeness, for example some years ago someone made carpets that looked like money - this was illegal !

Maybe someone has access to the exact rules ?

Then Mad magazine (published in South Africa) should have been illegal as well for having money with the Mad character that looked like the dollar bill on there as well. If it's illegal to have any currency likeness printed with a warning that says it's not real money then I'll eat my sisters kid's diaper

Not sure what the position is for foreign currency in SA.

Found this on a site explaining what the OP needed (who clearly can't google that well). Laws were apparently passed in 1999

In short, reproduction of U.S. Currency, in black and white or in color, is legal for numismatic, educational or advertising purposes provided that the final illustration is either less than 75% of the original size or more than 150% of the original size. There is no restriction on the size of the negatives, no restriction on electronic images, and no restriction on film or television use. There is also specifically nothing in the law that requires that the image be altered in any way, such as removing the serial numbers.
