Greedy killer monkeys were found to be catching and gobbling up large rats in Malaysia.
Shocked scientists uncovered the rat-catching macaques on palm oil plantations – and say the hungry predators could be used as pest control.
The southern pig-tailed macaques were typically thought to chow down on fruit.

What's shocking about it?

The reason lies right there.

Palm oil plantations are there at the expense of natural vegetation. Your peaceful fruit-eating macaques would've been eating the fruits of the vegetation that have been cleared for the growing palm oil plantations.

They've adapted to man-made change in their environment.

Monkeys are omnivores.

It is widely documented that their diets are influenced by their proximity to and interaction with humans. Macaques in temples across SE Asia will eat ice-cream from tourists, as an example.

Saying that, Macaques removed from humans almost exclusively follow a fruit/plant-based diet supplemented with invertebrates. They have been documented as opportunist consumers of nesting birds, bird eggs, lizards, frogs and fish, but plants/fruits make up as much as 90% of their diets.

These are now actively hunting large rodents, which is a shift from their natural feeding habits and is directly related to the effects of man-made changes to the ecology.

Perhaps these palm orchards offer no place for rats to hide thus making them easy prey for these macaques.

Why are the monkey being classed as greedy? Are they killing rats and not eating them or something?

Its more fascinating than shocking. I imagine those rats would also be loaded up with palm nuts making them a delicious nutty snack.

I stopped eating chicken when I was in Nepal after watching them feed them rats - not a pretty sight watching chickens fighting over rat carcasses.
