Good news for South Africans with green ID books

South Africa's green ID books will likely remain valid for years to come as the Department of Home Affairs (DHA) isn't issuing enough smart ID cards to wholly migrate to the newer technology.

During the DHA's budget vote speech presented on Monday, 15 July 2024, deputy minister Njabulo Nzuza said the department wants to issue 2.5 million smart ID cards during the 2024/25 financial year.

This is utter nonsense and DHA is NOT being honest with SAns. They are NOT issuing ANY smart cards to ANY SA CITIZEN that has naturalized here! I have been in SA since 1980 & 85 was the naturalization. My ID says SA CITIZEN but because country of birth is outside of SA, I am not deemed SAn according to the HOME AFFAIRS offices in Upington! This puts me in a different kraal when rounding up the people. My kids in 1 kraal, me in then other all because none of my parents are SAn either. Yet, some non citizens already have SMART CARDS illegally then!

They are busy with other things they don't want to say but an investigation is needed to be done surrounding this nonsense. My siblings are older than me and 1 younger but im the only SA citizen on my ID. Nothing they do is consistent or as per their working ethics is meant to be.

I don't really care to be honest as it saves me money but the lies and deceit needs to be cleared.

If there are 38 million green id books in 2013, why have they not updated their stats? Useless SA govt of 30yrs

My mother's ID also says SA Citizen but also not born here, so she was told she will never be able to get the card

A mate had his wallet nicked the other day...he got some paperwork from the bank saying he could apply for a smart ID however it has to be authorised from Home Affairs...so its seems they can do it...but would rather make another headache for themselves...

And he had a smart card and isnt a SA Citizen by birth...

The wife is US citizen with first permanent residency, then naturalized.

No card. So they are selling porky pies somewhere. Probably to cover their arses, as they know there are foreigners walking around with cards.

I just asked Home Affairs yesterday about applying for a smart card as they will be in my town today with the bus. The answer was, "we haven't yet received that instruction so we can't help you. The system also does not allow me to apply for the smart card. Lies all the way.
