It’s a semi private school and very prestigious school in SA

Grey High School is a semi-privateEnglish speaking high school (grades 8 - 12) for boys situated in the suburb of Mill park in Port Elizabeth in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa. It is one of the top sporting schools in the country for its rugby, cricket and hockey, as well as being one of the oldest schools in South Africaestablished in 1856.[1]

Odd school culture and heritage, how can the educators not know about this? I don't believe our 40 days involved animals, though I was sick during these days so didn't attend school, and neither did my varsity themed-animal events involve living creatures or any violent depiction.

Now, I know people with dark pasts come to animals, though it is not my place to scrutinise, and some schools which have odd cultural practices, but it seems we are going backwards.

Not cool. I wouldn't like to work or be associated with someone who has violent urges, and I have been in this position.

Its a Model C school and controlled by the government. The rector is the brother of a school mate of mine from my class.

Inside top EC schools' matric '40 days': Poisoned fish, drowned chickens, and laxative-fed pigeons

The Eastern Cape Department of Education has urged Grey High School and Collegiate Girls' High School to speedily finalise investigations into allegations of animal cruelty at the two top schools.

This comes as a group of boys and girls from the schools in Gqeberha have been accused of bringing shame to their schools after marking 40 days to the start of Grade 12 exams by allegedly engaging in barbaric celebrations that involved poisoning Koi fish, plucking and drowning chickens, and throwing turkeys into an empty swimming pool.

During this year's bizarre instalment of the traditional 40-day annual celebrations, pupils allegedly left a trail of destruction at both prestigious schools, including spreading raw eggs, soap, flour and toilet paper all over the grounds.

Collegiate is probing the matter, in a bid to get to the bottom of who is behind the trashing of the school’s tennis court and responsible for two traumatised turkeys rescued by an animal activist from the bottom of the school’s empty swimming pool.

The school is semi-private like most have been saying here. I know someone who went to the school for his entire high school education, and a teacher there.

Holy cow.

My "40 days" celebrations paled in comparison.

The DoBE seems to be under the impression it's a public school. I've got a friend who went there in the 60's that I can ask about it's former Model C status but I'm pretty sure it was one.

Ok. You are right. The rector can go ahead and disregard and ignore all instructions from the Department of Education.

On my 40 days two of us rigged up the fire hose on the mains hydrant and during school break sprayed everyone in the quadrant. We did not realize the headmaster was also in the quadrant.

We were caned 6 each. Damn violation of our human rights.

The buildings and property are owned by the state.
It's my understanding that some of the teachers' salaries are also paid by the state. So it's a semi private former model c school. As is Collegiate.

Their fees are actually higher than my kids' fully private schools.

Yes, the State calls the shots and pays all salaries but parents are allowed to supplement staff income. This is done by the school governing board who make the appointment and then pays any extra salary from the school account. This attracts the top teachers to that school.
Also, any enhancement to the school buildings by anyone belongs to the state.

I think the term semi-private is wrong as there is no private ownership of anything.

That's the way to do it.
