GRIEKWASTAD CASE ADJOURNED

The sentencing hearing of the young Griekwastad murderer was postponed by the Northern Cape High Court on Friday.

Final arguments for sentencing would be heard on June 24.

Northern Cape Judge President Frans Kgomo adjourned the matter after the defence and State finished presenting evidence in mitigation and aggravation of sentencing.

On March 27, the court found the boy guilty of the murders of Griekwastad farmer Deon Steenkamp, 44, his wife Christel, 43, and their daughter Marthella, 14. They were shot dead on their farm Naauwhoek on April 6, 2012.

The boy was also found guilty of raping the girl and lying to the police.

GUARDIANS STAND BY GRIEKWASTAD KILLER

The Griekwastad murderer's guardian family will not abandon the boy, the Northern Cape High Court heard on Friday.

"Not one of us sees him as a monster," the guardian's wife told the court. She may not be named to protect the minor's identity.

She was testifying in mitigation of sentence before Northern Cape Judge President Frans Kgomo.

On March 27, the court found the boy guilty of the murders of Griekwastad farmer Deon Steenkamp, 44, his wife Christel, 43, and their daughter Marthella, 14. They were shot dead on their farm Naauwhoek on April 6, 2012.

The boy was also found guilty on a charge of rape of the girl and lying to the police.

The woman told the court the family still believed the boy did not commit the crimes.

She described him as a late developer compared to her own sons.

"Various friends have visited while he was with us. Me, my daughter, were there and he behaved well."

The woman told the court she knew the police had contacted various girls who had contact with the boy, as they played sport together.

"They could not find one single indication of bad behaviour towards girls. Those parents phoned us because they were exasperated at some of the questions."

The woman explained to the court why she and her husband decided to be the boy's guardians.

"There was no mercy for the child from day one. How must a child act normal?" she asked.

Asked by Kgomo what she would do if the boy admitted to the murders in five years, she said: "If he tells me to my face, I will have to believe it. I would not hide my head in the ground."

She said she would still support him.

"To the court it might not look so or in the media. He is a small boy. He cannot assert himself."

For this reason they could not write him off.

Prosecutor Hannes Cloete called police psychiatrist Major Bronwynn Stollarz (SUBS: CORRECT) to testify in aggravation of sentencing after the defence concluded its arguments in mitigation.

She told the court the boy posed a risk to society as his crimes had involved manipulation and violence.

Stollarz said the boy should take part in a sex offenders' treatment programme in prison and attend regular psychotherapy.

The matter was postponed to 24 June for final sentencing argument.

GRIEKWASTAD TEEN MURDER IN COURT

Sentencing procedures against the young Griekwastad murderer will resume in the Northern Cape High Court on Tuesday.

The 17-year-old boy has been convicted of three murders and rape.

On March 27, the court found him guilty of the murders of Griekwastad farmer Deon Steenkamp, 44, his wife Christel, 43, and their daughter Marthella, 14. They were shot dead on their farm Naauwhoek on April 6, 2012.

He was also found guilty of raping the girl and lying to police.

In his last appearance, his grandmother told the court that he cried, but not in front of others.

She was being questioned by Riaan Bode, for the boy, during arguments in mitigation of sentencing.

The court also heard that the young murderer's guardian family would not abandon him.

"Not one of us sees him as a monster," the guardian's wife told the court. She could not be named to protect the minor's identity.

The woman told the court the family still believed the boy did not commit the crimes.

She described him as a late developer compared to her own sons.

I don't think 20 years is enough.

So that means he will be out in 5 or 10 years if he behaves in prison?

Not good enough.

Considering that the judge said he "showed no remorse" he should have had more years behind bars.

nor do I but I think the judge is right on the law on this one
I'll have to read the judgment itself but I strongly suspect that the fact that the accused (now convicted) is a juvenile at the time of commission is a mitigating factor at law

Moreover the real determinant of appropriate sentence unfortunately is outside of the hands of the court and sits at the parole board

2 more days. Then he turns 18.

Think it makes the timing of this case too perfect. From my understaning if he's found guilty under the age of 18 his face and name can't be released. That is unless he appeals after he turned 18.

I might be wrong though.

You might be correct.

In which case it sucks even more that this psychopath will be out in society again so soon.

'BE A MAN': GRIEKWASTAD JUDGE

Northern Cape Judge President Frans Kgomo on Wednesday urged the young Griekwastad farm murderer to act like a man and face the consequences of his deeds.

"In two days you are a man. Now, be a man," Kgomo told the 17-year-old boy before sentencing him to an effective 20 years in prison.

The boy, who turns 18 on Friday, was sentenced for the murders of Griekwastad farmer Deon Steenkamp, 44, his wife Christel, 43, and their daughter Marthella, 14.

They were shot dead on their farm Naauwhoek on April 6, 2012.

The boy was also convicted for raping the girl and lying to the police.

Kgomo sentenced the boy to 20 years imprisonment on each of the three murder counts, 12 years (SUBS: CORRECT) on the rape count, and four years for defeating the ends of justice.

The sentences would run concurrently.

Kgomo said that although the State asked for the maximum penalty he was prepared to give a remission on sentence.

The reason for this was the boy was a first offender and had a chance to be rehabilitated.

The court agreed with evidence that the boy's continued claim of innocence during the trial was worrying.

Kgomo agreed with evidence that the boy needed intensive therapy during imprisonment.

This would include programmes in relation to eventually showing grief.

The court found the boy was not influenced as a minor by anybody else in committing the crimes.

On Wednesday, almost all the police officials, local and national, who worked on the case were present in court.

The group, as well as family of the victims, formed a column of people stretching from the desk behind prosecutor Hannes Cloete to the back of the courtroom.

On the other side of the courtroom a much smaller group of the boy's family, his guardian and family, and representatives of the National Institute for Crime Prevention and the Reintegration of Offenders (Nicro) were sitting.
