GRIEKWASTAD KILLER TO APPEAL

Eighteen-year-old Don Steenkamp, sentenced to 20 years' jail for the triple murder of his family in Griekwastad, will appeal against both his sentence and convictions, the NPA said on Tuesday.

"They have submitted the forms for appeal and it is for both convictions and sentences," said National Prosecuting Authority regional spokeswoman Mashudu Malabi.

On August 13, Northern Cape Judge President Frans Kgomo jailed Steenkamp to 20 years for each of the three murders, 12 years for rape, and another four years for lying to the police. All sentences would run concurrently.

This was for the murders of his father, Griekwastad farmer Deon Steenkamp, 44, his mother Christel, 43, and his sister Marthella, 14. He shot them dead on their farm Naauwhoek on April 6, 2012. He raped Marthella and lied to police.

So he is guilty?

Normally they just appeal the convictions. Now he is also appealing the sentencing. Meaning he accepts that he might face jail but wants a lesser sentence... This is going to blow up in his face :D Should have just taken the 20 years ;)

TEEN'S LAWYER UNPAID: REPORT

The former lawyer for Don Steenkamp, convicted for the murder of his family is taking legal steps to recover his legal fees from Steenkamp's guardian, The Star reported on Monday.

Stoffel de Jager was appointed instructing attorney by Steenkamp's guardian, Bennie Heckroodt, according to the report.

On Friday, de Jager handed a draft order regarding "monies owed" to acting Judge Mpho Mamosebo in the Northern Cape High Court.

De Jager would not disclose the outstanding amount, saying there was an agreement between him and Div Pretorius from Haarhoffs Attorneys, who appeared on behalf of Heckroodt, not to speak to the media, according to the publication.

Last year, the court found Steenkamp guilty of the murders of his father, Griekwastad farmer Deon Steenkamp, 44, mother Christel, 43, and his sister Marthella, 14.

They were shot dead on their farm Naauwhoek on April 6, 2012.

The teenager was also found guilty of raping the girl and lying to the police.

Steenkamp was sentenced to 20 years for the crimes.

The appeal against the sentence would take place on March 9 in the Northern Cape High Court.

STEENKAMP'S APPEAL TO BE MOVED

The appeal of 18-year-old Don Steenkamp, the Griekwastad boy found guilty of murder and rape, will not be heard in the Northern Cape High Court next week as planned, Beeld reported on Monday.

Instead, it would be referred to the Supreme Court of Appeal in Bloemfontein on a date yet to be determined.

Steenkamp's case would have been heard on March 9 before a full bench.

Last year he was found guilty of murdering his parents Deon, 44, and Christel, 43, Steenkamp, and his sister Marthella, 14, on April 6, 2012.

Marthella was also raped.

He was sentenced to 20 years in prison.

This followed talks between the National Prosecuting Authority and his lawyers. According to the Children's Act a minor automatically had the right to appeal. At the time of the judgment and sentencing he was a minor.

GRIEKWASTAD MURDERER TO APPEAL

Don Steenkamp, sentenced to 20 years' jail for the triple murder of his family in Griekwastad, will launch an appeal against his 20-year jail sentence, in the Northern Cape High Court on Monday.

The 18-year-old received the sentence last year for killing his parents, Griekwastad farmer Deon Steenkamp, 44, and Christel, 43, and sister, Marthella, 14.

They were shot dead on their farm Naauwhoek on April 6, 2012.

The teenager was also found guilty of raping the girl and lying to the police.

In January it was reported that Steenkamp's former lawyer Stoffel de Jager had approached the courts in a bid to recover unpaid legal fees from Steenkamp.

Does anyone know whether this little **** appealed and what the outcome was?
To think, he will be eligible for parole in 3 years time, mid twenties with possibly a large inheritance waiting for him (I know he can not directly inherit from his parents since he killed them, but I am sure his grandparents will direct the monies to him)...
How is it even possible that he was not given 3 life sentences for the murders including 20 odd years for the rape of his sister is beyond me...

My understanding is that won't inherit anything due to the South African law. The law states that you forfeit the inheritance if you murdered to get it.

Correct, however nothing prevents whomever did inherit everything (I assume his grand parents) to then transfer the inheritance over to him...

Watched the movie with Arnold Vosloo playing the part of the Detective Dick De Waal.

Was pretty interesting and chilling.
Dug up this thread to check on some of the details of the trial.

Also watched it last night.
It was interesting reading this thread from the beginning. The trial was so drawn out so this was like a concise recap.
