Opel’s Geneva Motor Show presence was strong, but the star of the exhibit was its GT Concept.

The stylish concept vehicle was shown at the Palexpo Hall in Geneva as a World Premiere and previews the German company’s future models. Naturally, the design will be shared with its British sister brand, Vauxhall.

The GT Concept marks Opel’s homage to the Experimental GT, the retro precursor of this car. Opel’s GT concept has a front-mid turbocharged engine and a rear-wheel-drive configuration with a sequential gearbox.

Not just the exterior of this vehicle will be an inspiration to future Opel cars, as the interior features preview how the cockpits of upcoming models from the German brand will look.

Naturally, the self-learning human machine interface that recognizes the driver and adjusts to the preset preferences will not come to market very soon. However, button-less operation through touchpad and voice controls could come to the Opel cars of the next decade.

The idea behind the latest Opel concept belongs to Mark Adams, the man who penned the look of this vehicle. The British designer followed the philosophy he calls “Sculptural Artistry meets Technical Precision.” The name of the concept evokes the 1964 GT Concept, drawn in the Vauxhall Design&Engineering Centre in Luton. The facility was opened in 1964, as well.

Opel views the GT Concept as an evolution from the 2013 Monza concept. The latter inspired the look of recent models from the German carmaker’s range so that we could see some features from the GT on Opel cars launched in the coming years. Most likely, cars that Opel will launch two or three years from now will carry inspiration in this concept.

Opel has no public plans for making a coupe with a front-mid engine, so there’s slim chance we’ll see something like the GT Concept for sale in an Opel showroom too soon. After all, the German branch of General Motors is recovering from difficult financial times, so they cannot afford to build cars that would sell in unprofitable volumes.

They usually tone it down a lot before production - if this ever makes it too production. Yeah I saw that other thread a month ago, this is the official unveiling of the concept.

Given that most of the concept/new car threads seem to be from mid-last-year, figured a month wasn't that old. :whistling:

Yeah, there's basically no way they're going to get away with those windows as they are, and some backassward country *cof*america*cof* is going to have regulations that'll force them to slap mirrors on the side.

Still, the basic shape is what we can hope will survive the process, and if it comes out anything like what they've got on the stand there then it's a winner for sure. And we can always use more rear-wheel enthusiast machines. The hype around the 86 has died down somewhat, so it's time for a new hero.

Looks a little too inspired by the AMG GT.

Actually it stays very true to the original GT, small and dinky with the same lines and curves.

I know Hannes; former Editor of Car Mag; was an Opel GT fan & owned one. He sold it a few years later on.

My only issue with this Opel GT Concept...(I know it's a concept) is that everything about it seems too far fetched for it to be remotely production-ready.

Give us a GT Concept that looks close to or is not far off production-ready.

This is pie in the sky stuff right here....

That cabin looks really small. It's also going to turn into a sauna if they keep that continious glass roof.
And no sunvisor.

I know it's a concept but as it is that cabin has big problems. If you are over 5 feet tall you will be staring into the roof instead of thru the window.
