Eskom accused of awarding tender to Gupta family

Eskom is being accused of awarding a coal-supply contract to a company owned by the controversial Gupta family, despite the company failing four quality tests.

The Sunday Times is reporting that Tegeta Exploration and Resources had been trying to secure the deal since 2011 but was rejected because of their substandard coal.

The paper says four Eskom executives were suspended for questioning the deal.

The paper claims the Gupta family’s company was awarded a R4 billion contract to supply coal to Eskom’s Majuba Power Station in Mpumalanga, over a 10-year-period.

After three failed bids, Tegeta was given the contract after a fifth test conducted on its coal found the product to be marginal.

However, the deal went sour, when Eskom suspended the agreement last month - due to poor quality.

Maybe, when corruption reaches a certain level Comrade Cyril regards it as becoming clean again.
After all he is incredibly wealthy from feeding at the trough rather than from any actual work.

The ANC is serious about fighting corruption and there is political will in government to deal with the findings of institutions such as the public protector’s office.

This is according to Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa, who was answering questions in the National Assembly on Wednesday.

The ANC is about as anti-corruption as the Democratic Republic of the Congo or the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (North Korea) are democratic.

Dunno, if I had a major supplier that was delivering 'erratic or inconsistent' quality of raw materials, the last thing I would do is sign what can only be considered as a very long term contract with them. The mind boggles.

Ok so the stuff is not always good but they are working on it, a year maybe ( if we are that desperate for the raw material) and we reject sub standard material at their cost. Not 10 years.

Sunday Times gets a tongue lashing from Howa

Durban - Oakbay Investments director Nazeem Howa has hit out at the Sunday Times after a report that he labelled as “factually bankrupt” on Sunday.

The Sunday Times reported that an investigation has discovered that a Gupta mine failed a coal quality test four times before landing the multibillion-rand deal on the fifth attempt.

In a press statement, Howa lashed out at the publication, insisting that their article and editors comments confirmed the adage that “one should not let the facts get in the way of publishing a good story”.

“Today’s editor’s comment makes very serious factual errors in its attempt to link the Gupta family to the Presidency.”

“It claims one of the President’s wives is employed within the group. None of the President’s wives are currently employed by the group.

“It states as fact that the Gupta’s paid for the house of the President’s wife when this is factually untrue.

“It states “two of Zuma’s children have big jobs with Gupta firms” which is again, factually untrue

It claims we are supplying Eskom with sub-standard coal – again, the daily testing at Eskom-controlled labs will prove this to be untrue. The discrepancy in quality only came up in August 2015, despite daily testing.

Howa went on to say that the lead story had “little reference” to fact.

“The Sunday Times again tries to place the Gupta family in the middle of its reporting. Oakbay Investments, the family’s primary vehicle, holds less than 50% of the shareholding in Tegeta. So to place the Gupta’s in the headline is once again mischievous and misleading.”

“It is also worth noting that Oakbay is run by a team of competent and professional managers. It is insulting and demeaning to the Oakbay management team or that of any of its subsidiaries when media constantly refer to the family in the decision-making,” he said.

The truth hurts, doesn't it?

If the Gupta's weren't involved in every dodgy and corrupt deal in this country maybe the press will leave them alone?

To be honest, the Sunday Times should be able to back up this with strong evidence. If they can't, then it is counter productive to publish the story. And they would certainly know that the Presidency will come out guns blazing.

Frankly President Zuma's frequent calls for the eradication of corruption in this country would carry more weight if he himself wasn't at the centre of every corruption scandal.

Clearly not lol.

Sarc noted but contracts at this lengh, good coal or bad coal (it doesnt matter) will not help Eskom.
With multiple suppliers let competition/capability/quality/price dictate the supplier list.
Keep them honest, 3-5year max length agreements, price matching clause after 3 years on unsolicited quotes.

Not sign your life away for 10 years.

I suppose the devil is in the detail of the contract itself, and likewise if the Sunday Times has botched this they deserve a sanction.

Eskom defends decision to use Gupta coal

JOHANNESBURG – Eskom has defended its decision to use coal from a company owned by the controversial Gupta family, saying tests were conducted and the coal is of good quality.

The Sunday Times reported that Tegeta Exploration and Resources had been trying to secure the deal since 2011 but was rejected because of substandard coal.

It claims the company was awarded the R4 billion contract to supply power stations over 10 years after a fifth test conducted on its coal found the product to be marginal.

Eskom however says this is not true.
