Hello almal,

First time poster here so please dont hate me for what i'm about to ask. I can sit the whole week on the trillion threads and try and look for an answer and will probably still be left in want. So please help a brother out.

I will be moving in the next month to a new area, and looking to get a DSL connection. The thing is there are so many options at so many prices it almost feels like a compromise every time. What would you guys reckon is the best bang for buck, when considering line speed (unshaping obviously the better option?) versus cap (either moer big cap or uncapped) and with who (service is obviously a must). I will have a dedicated download computer running most of the day downloading and uploading random crap (mostly p2p/torrents), and occasionally using the line for gaming (dota/cod4/bad company). the max im willing to spend at the moment, all inclusive, would be 800p/m.

Thanking you in advance.

If your looking to do massive amount of downloads, imo there's only one option. 4Mbps DSL with uncapped MWeb. Its going to go over your budget though - if you get Mweb to take over your line as well its R899 and that excludes the phone line rental at about R130 something.

It all depends on how much downloading you will be doing. If your only going to do a few GB a month then there are a lot more cheaper options.

I have a similar set-up to you, with a dedicated machine running BitTorrent on automatic RSS, and I can get quite carried away. So, I've tried them all, Axxess, Afrihost, Screamer, and MWEB. Without a shadow of a doubt, MWEB 4Meg Shaped Uncapped is the way to go. The service department is pleasant enough, tech support is good and accounts are patient. If you're looking to download in excess of 300GB every month and are prepared to wait that mush longer for your stuffs to download and supercharge at night, MWEB. Definitely going to compromise on the shaped aspect, though I suspect that won't be a problem, as it isn't for me by having my downloads run automatically on the dedicated machine.

shot for the response gents.

hambone, what speeds can i expect on the mweb SHAPE uncapped account (the R899)? i mean, im use to 384 level 2 from telkom. so probably anything above 50Kb/s will blow me away. just want to make it a worthwhile exercise. And i dont have an aim really. as long as the pc is running and i have seeds or leechers, i'll be happy. it has to be worth the grand a month though :) - oh and obviously also the gaming experience must suffer because of the account being raped by shaping.

Sweet.

On the R899 uncapped Mweb deal (4Mbps line) I get around 150Kbps during the day and full speed after hours. They have been having some problems as of late but it seems to be sorted out now.

no one seems to answer my question about gaming though :/ - unless of course, you owes arent into any of that. wondering how would something like warcraft versus call of duty run? thanks for the input thus far gents :)

deewhyoh, during the day you can expect speeds similar to your 384, at roughly 34 - 70Kb/s during the day. I must stress that this is only for your torrents, regular browsing goes at full speed. At night you can expect a tiered increase at 9PM, 12PM and MAX speed at 2AM. MWEB has said that gaming is not ideal on this package, but a shaped 4Meg line is still better than unshaped 384, so your gaming experience will be the same if not a little better then your current package.

Gaming usually sucks on a shaped service. Plenty of people though have a small unshaped account just for gaming.
