Thats it.

After 1 and a half months of Cell C "Speed" stick then working then not and each time slower the "Woooooosh" has finally given up the ghost.

After purchasing the 5GB bundle in Dec I was the happiest bloke on the planet. But slowly -oh so slowly- the joy has evaporated each and everytime I needed to log on to the internet since mid Feb.

This is the slowest speed I have EVER seen in my life. It didn't even finish the upload....

ping = 554ms TO CELL C's OWN DATACENTRE.
Download speed = 0.07kbps
Upload speed = Still waiting

Anyone know that email address of cell c - I need to inform that they are not getting money for nothing anymore.

Where are you based? I have had some issues and discover interesting workarounds.

How is your internet experience at different locations? Or are you only experiencing issues at your default location? Have you tried forcing the modem to connect to a different tower where you live?

Viva - I took it to the shop in Kollanade the other day and suddenly it was working perfectly.

So apparently between December and February something changed to the east of the Kollanade that affects connectivity.

No, I haven't tried connecting to a different tower. Could you maybe post the steps involved?

Thanks Ginggs!

Ok

Just got word from the Cell C okes. Apparently it is a tower issue where the transmitter needs to be adjusted. ETA 31/3/11.

Will keep an eye on it and keep on posting.

Thanks guys

They told me a different story every time. The tower is the fault, your modem is the fault, area, ...

Do you have another usb modem? Say a vodafone or something? try put the card into that modem and see if you experience a difference.

I tried my vodacom soap-on-a-rope, but I think the E220 does not work on the 900Mhz frequency.

I just refuses to pick up the sim. (Although this might have something to do with the reader in the E220 and not the transmitter.)

I'll try connecting on my phone, see if that makes a difference.

Hi Zombielord, will happily see how we can sort the issue. Thuto, one of my A-team, will get in touch if you PM me your coordinates.

Thanks

Hi Daiyaan,

if you start a Datasession on 3G you get the IP address from the 3G SGSN. When leaving the 3G coverage a new Radio Access Bearer (RAB) will be estabished and the 2G SGSN will assigne a new IP address to you. Your application will drop due to this new IP address. Making a voice call is different, there the handover of voice is taken care by the Inter Radio Access Technology (IRAT) and you can continue your voice call. (no IP address change involved)

Hope that helps to understand why you lose the connection of your appliation when changing from 3G to EDGE (=2G)

Hello the_Zombielord,

I got your case from Lars to look into. We have had drive test teams out and today (yes... Saturday) we are doing the analyses. From the coverage plot, you are in a - 100 to -90dBm zone, so that does not look good at all. As my planner tells me, "At such low levels, indoor coverage will be severly limited."
The serving cells around the point of interest are ID2109 sector 1 and ID2109 sector 3. The height of the site is 36m.
ID2178 is closer, but with a lower height of 10.5m, and therfore cannot provided coverage.

What can we do?

Well, there is a Site (tower) in the plan what might help in future, but we only just have signed the rental agreement with the property owner. So it might now take some more weeks until this site is up and running. This site is higher than the serving one today but unfortunately also not too close to your loaction. I will return to Lars with this finding and discuss the different option. If you PM me your email address, I can send you the report my guys did.

Unfortunate I have no better news for you today.

But we will continue to get new sites on air in Gauteng and step by step increase the "Whoosh"-coverage.

Hi NSN

My RSSI values have been -87dbm consistently from the day I signed up with Cell C.
During Dec '10 and Jan '11 to mid Feb the connection was stable. During Dec I downloaded a 600MB update in just under an hour. So the speed was excellent.

Why now would this change? What happened that the network speed and coverage would be so dramatically reduced?

If there was a coverage issue, I would have noticed it from the day I started using it.

@OP it might be worth it for you to get an external antenna. Theyre about R600 odd and apparently they work wonders.

do you have a link to such a product side where I can buy one and test if this realy helps also in the the_zombilord case? I am curious, as such external antenna usualy disturb the Radio admission balance in 3G (technology of wisper) and other user (not the one with the antenna) are getting degraded services. please PM me such a link.
