Cape Town - Half the South African population supports the draft bylaw which would prevent guesthouses, pubs, clubs and theatres in Cape Town residential areas from selling alcohol past 21:00.

This is the finding of latest African Response's 2010 Barometer survey released on Monday.

The proposed bylaw had generated a significant amount of debate ahead of the 2010 Fifa Soccer World Cup because one of the implications was that tourists, for example, would not be able to go for dinner outside the city after 21:00.

A large chunk of South Africans (41%) did not think passing the bylaw was a good idea, the survey found.

When asked whether this should be applied to the rest of South Africa, respondents demonstrated the same trend - 51% agreed it should, while 42% thought it was a bad idea.

Damn... this is mad!
How on earth could anyone say yes to these new laws?? I bet you they didn't come to Stellenbosch to do this survey or study!!

Mad mad mad

The problem is people will start drinking earlier and thus get drunk earlier. Then drive home earlier when there are more people on the roads. If they get drunk and drive home at 3 o'clock in the morning there aren't a lot of other cars they can bump into, but at 8pm or 9pm there are more people still on the roads...

Yes - but which half?

I fully support the by-law.

How can you support it? Why just not ban alcohol? Forcing bars to close earlier just forces people to drink faster or start earlier. It won't reduce the number of drunk people on the roads, all it will do is get drunk people on the roads much earlier...

Or people are going to house parties after the bar closes, and irritate the people living around them... This is not a solution, it will just cause more problems...

Spose this is 2 be expected from a Stellies student :p what would you guys do after 9? lol absolutly nothing, stellies would be a dead duck..

So many problems arrive from alcohol abuse, even though you may not see it, curbing selling hours WILL make a big difference to this country. With a limit in place police will be able to enforce it much easier and the public will be more weary not to abuse it...

Just as the 11pm law in the UK resulted in binge drinking (binging FTW:D).

Guvamunt makes life kark- people drink.

This is not the solution.

They may still serve food, and customers may bring their own wine. They will not be allowed to sell wine. Still crazy though. Many clubs only open at 21h00 or 22h00!

What will happen to Springboks? Will they also be forced to close at 21h? Or still at 4-6h?

If the police can come out and make sure a place is not selling alcohol after 21h then they can just as well make sure people aren't drunk in 2 in the morning, then they can drive home...

It seems a bit odd.

A bylaw is local legislation for a particular municipal area and only the opinion of the people living in that jurisdiction can be obtained in order to decide whether the Municipal Council should approve the by-law or not.

Why would they mention 'half the SA population' then ????
