Hello all,
I popped this up here – but I suppose it could probably go in any of the more general hardware tech subforums.
Regardless, would appreciate some thoughts!
We're painting the inside of the house at the moment. Basically means that if I want to put up network cables, now is the opportunity.
I have an Asus N55 router located pretty centrally in the house, at the bottom of the stairs. Above it sees a study and bedroom. Below, about 10 m away, behind a dividing-half wall, sees a Mac Mini. About 30 metres away, with a few rooms etc. in between, sees the main bedroom, where I'm hoping to pop in a ATV2/3, sometime in next year.
We have laptops and iDevices that work fine on Wifi. The signal is good in most places – but the main bedroom (where the ATV is to go), has some dead-spots.
My question?
Does it make sense to try and hard-wire network cabling to any of the points in the house, from the router – i.e. for potential future devices to be able to plug in directly to the router, as opposed to using Wifi?
The Mac Mini really flies when TI is behaving – so not sure about much benefit there. But the main bedroom/ATV loooks like a good candidate, surely? And if I run something upstairs, I would then be able to pop in another ATV into the upstairs bedroom OR connect our printer to run as a network based one?
I guess what I'm asking – is the cost/benefit aspect worth it? Not sure how expensive network cabling is these days? I could always just connect it, and leave the rolls lying in the ceiling, if not needed. The paint job means I can pop up that plastic tubing[??], and have it painted now to match the rest of the wall. So would presumably plug in the 4x cables, and then get it up into the ceiling – and then repeat at the delivery points, even if I don't plug in just yet...
TL: DR >> good idea to cable to network, or if WiFi does the trick, leave as is?
Any thoughts would be welcomed!
