GWM Ora 03 finally gets Apple CarPlay 18 months after launch

New and existing owners of ex-Funky Cat can visit a dealer to have smartphone connectivity added for free

Ora Funky Cat and GWM Ora 03 owners can now finally use smartphone mirroring services, following a long-awaited software update.

The 03 was launched in the UK as the Funky Cat in November 2022, and while it wasn't fitted with Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, this was said to be scheduled for roll-out just a few months later.

Autocar recently drove a new extended-range 03 with smartphone mirroring, but it was described as in beta form and was still not being univerally rolled out. Now the software is finally ready and will be fitted to new and existing cars free of charge.

The update will be installed on all current and future cars for free and is said to have been designed and "extensively" tested to work with the electric hatchback's infotainment, which includes two 10.25in displays.

Customers will simply be met upon entry with a prompt to connect their phone.

The 03's 'Hello Ora' voice assistant, which gives hands-free assistance for functions such as the radio, windows and climate controls, can still be used when a phone is connected.

GMW Tank 300 Diesel Confirmed

Finally! GWM has listened to the fans and the Tank 300 diesel has been confirmed for production. Here are some early details.

According to a report from CarNewsChina, GWM will build a Tank 300 diesel. This is great news for potential customers as many had been put off by the lack of a torquey and efficient powertrain. While the Tank 300 HEV petrol hybrid offers commendable performance and efficiency, a modern diesel engine should prove better.

The motor in question will be the 2.4-litre turbocharged diesel engine, sourced from the GWM bakkies. The GW4D24 motor offers up 135 kW and 480 Nm, which compares favourably to other diesel-powered SUVs like the Hyundai Tucson (137 kW / 416 Nm) and Mahindra Scorpio-N (129 kW / 400 Nm).

The Tank 300 Diesel should be the most economical and offer the most range between fill ups. A quick estimate suggests the diesel-powered Tank should comfortably complete over 1000 km, based on its 80 litre fuel tank capacity. In comparison, the hybrid Tank 300 claims 8.4 L/100 km and has an endurance range of 952 km.

As a reminder, Tank is Great Wall Motors offroad adventure brand and the Tank 300 is the first model to arrive locally. We’re expecting the bigger Tank 500 to touch down before the end of 2024.

Great Wall Motor retreats from Europe amidst sales slump

In a surprising turn of events, Great Wall Motor (GWM), a prominent Chinese automaker, has decided to shutter its European headquarters in Munich by the end of August. The move will result in the termination of approximately 100 employees. The decision comes in the wake of disappointing sales figures in the European market.

Despite ambitious plans unveiled in 2021 to penetrate the European electric vehicle market with its ORA brand, GWM has struggled to gain traction. In 2022, the company entered into a partnership with Emil Frey, Europe's largest car dealer group, to distribute its Ora and Wey branded vehicles. However, the collaboration failed to yield the desired results, with GWM reportedly registering only 6,300 new vehicles in Europe in 2023.

The Munich headquarters' closure doesn't signal GWM's complete withdrawal from Europe. The company intends to continue providing services in existing markets. Still, European operations will be managed from its headquarters in China. Expansion into new European markets has been put on hold indefinitely.

GWM's retreat from Europe contrasts sharply with the ambitious expansion plans of other Chinese EV startups, such as Nio and XPeng. Nio recently opened an eight-story Nio House in the Netherlands, its largest in Europe, and XPeng launched the G9 and G6 in France.

Haval Jolion and Jolion Pro (2024) Price & Specs

Pro variants – ahead of the launch in South Africa. And, surprisingly, it’s cheaper than before!

GWM South Africa will soon roll out a revised Haval Jolion range, complete with new-to-Mzansi Jolion Pro derivatives. And Cars.co.za has uncovered local pricing ahead of the official launch.

With the updated line-up expected to hit the market later in June 2024, our information suggests the Chinese firm’s revamped Jolion portfolio will again comprise 8 front-wheel-drive derivatives, though plenty of trim-level reshuffling will take place.

For the record, the outgoing range’s pricing bookends stand at R348 350 and R579 950, while the rejigged line-up’s brackets are fascinatingly both lower and tighter at R345 950 and R516 950. More on individual-model pricing in a bit…

The big news (besides the price cuts, of course) is the arrival of the new Jolion Pro derivatives, which will be sold alongside selected surviving standard Jolion variants. At 4 470 mm long, the Jolion Pro – which wears the “Chitu” nameplate in the brand’s domestic market – is 2 mm shorter than the standard version of the crossover but measures 24 mm wider (at 1 898 mm) and stands 44 mm taller (at 1 625 mm).
