Haval/GWM Cars

I had a corolla engine seize in 2014. Doesn't mean Toyota's are unreliable. **** happens. If it happens with most of their cars, then it's a whole different story.

In my sample size of 1, 1 was defective. Either is a crazy coincidence or it speaks to the cars being unreliable.
I've seen lots of people on the 4x4 community forum express regret about buying the GWM double cabs. They are cheap, because they are built with low quality components.

Goedkoop koop is duur koop.

How many older GWM's do you see on the road? *ahem*

Not a good way to look at it as there was not many sold at all.... but I do see a couple driving around still. not

:wtf:

Just went through the GWM section and not seeing much difference between the other vehicle sections(Ford, Mitsubushi). You have guys very happy with their vehicles(most of the people) and here and there a guy complaining about a noise or part prices. Most GWM's on that forum does high millage before it gives problems.

Ford & Mazda problems - 6 pages since 2008
GWM - 3 pages since 2012

Now ask yourself, do you think GWM sells half the cars Ford do? Not only that, Ford had 4 additional years to rake up problems.
Then ask yourself, in terms of reliability how does Ford stack up to Toyota?

So if Ford is making GWM look like a sheetshow, and Ford is poop compared to the market leader, any half baked banana can figure out GWM is not reliable.

Have you even looked at the first page of the Ford/Mazda problems thread and compared it to the GWM problems thread????

Ford/Mazda problems(only checked 1st page)
Problem: complete loss of engine power in 4H (20000 km)
Problem: Aircon seized (56000 km)
Problem: Front Diff broken 4 times (20000 - 50000 km)
Problem:front diff had serious whine (25000 km)
Problem:aircon not working (25000 km)
Problem: Front Diff Broken (97000 km)
Problem: Gearbox got stuck in gear or refused to select gear. (20000 km)

GWM problems
Problem: Oil leak from dipstik (10114 km)
Problem: vibration under dash at 2000rpm. (118000 km)
Problem:rough idleling (16470 km)
Problem:turbo pipe burst (20500 km)
Problem:blown turbo pipe( at 4000 km)
Problem: Rough Iddle(5000 km)
Problem: Warped brake discs (12500 km)

I just compared the first 7 problems on the first page of each problem thread. I would much rather have rough idle than broken diffs.

And do not even speak of brand reliability with Ford when you have read articles on a weekly basis about kuga/ecosport/fiesta having burning problems.

You read the first page. Good.
Buy yourself a GWM, I don't care if you want to be stupid.

Yeah, you're a complete tool if you base a major purchasing decision on some random anecdotal statistically insignificant story on this forum. But you go for it.

Thanks. Fortunately I am informed enough not to solely rely on 1 source to form a cohesive picture. As it appears your 1 braincell is occupied with it's current task, when you are ready to task switch give the consideration a go.

You are spoiling a GWM thread, take your anger issues somewhere!

A friend of mine had a GWM double that he sold recently, not very flashy, but it did the job expected of it. Besides using a lot of fuel he never had any problems with the vehicle.

Oh dear....

Watch GWM Steed 6 bakkie fail ANCAP crash-test

The Australasian New Car Assessment Programme (ANCAP) has released what it describes as a “concerning” two-star safety rating for the latest GWM Steed.

The independent safety authority tested a double-cab version of the latest Steed, which is known as the Steed 6 here in South Africa. The variant tested was the 4×2 petrol model (not offered in SA), and the rating applies to units produced from September 2016.

“This is a disappointing result for consumers and the brand,” said ANCAP chief executive officer, James Goodwin.

“While the Steed is equipped with six airbags and electronic stability control, features which were not offered on the previous model, there has been little change to the vehicle’s structure to improve the safety of the passenger cabin,” he added.

The base turbodiesel derivative offered in South Africa, for the record, features just two airbags and no stability control, while the second, higher-trim variant has six (and also adds stability control).

ANCAP reported “excessive footwell deformation, separation of footwell panels and pedal displacement” in the frontal offset crash test. Steering column components were a potential source of knee injury for the driver, while dashboard components were a potential injury source for both the driver and passenger. Protection of the driver and front passenger from whiplash injuries was rated as “marginal”.

The safety authority also said that the Chinese bakkie is not fitted with top tether child restraint anchorages and is “therefore not suitable for transporting young children”.

5 cheapest double-cab bakkies in SA

If your budget can’t stretch to the amounts listed by the premium double-cabs in our '5 most expensive bakkies in SA' list, there are a few other options to choose from at a much cheaper price.

Unsurprisingly, the majority of "cheap" double-cabs in SA belong to either Chinese or Indian automakers; the GWM Steed 5 2.2 double-cab MPi is the cheapest at R189 900.

At this price it is the only double-cab in the South African bakkie market for less than R200 000.

It's important to note that none of the five double-cabs in the below list will have the refinement of the bakkies in the aforementioned list but they do have one major advantage; they're cheap.

Here are five cheap double-cabs in SA:

1 GWM Steed 5 2.2 double cab MPi base - R189 900 (excludes special 10-year anniversary discount)

Though the Steed 5 has been built as a workhorse, the double-cab derivatives have a slightly more "leisure" aspect. Priced from R189 900 the Steed 5 double-cab is not as plush as its Steed 5E nor Steed 6 brethren but it's the cheapest way to own a double-cab in SA.

2 Mahindra Bolero 2.5 TD double cab 4x4 - R207 995

A solid top 10 contender when double-cab sales are tallied at the end of each month, the Bolero has come to be popular among South African farmers. It's not as fancy nor as good looking as some of the other bakkies featured but it is formidable and not afraid to get its tyres dirty.

3 JMC Boarding 2.8 TD double cab Lux - R209 880

Like the Steed 5 the JMC Boarding is a bakkie built for a utilitarian role, suited for life on a farm of construction site. It has features such as aircon and power steering that has become the norm in bakkies in recent years

4 GWM Steed 5E 2.4 double cab SX - R234 900 (excludes special 10-year anniversary discount)

The Steed 5E offers more luxury and comfort compared to the Steed 5. For less than R240 000, its interior is slightly more suited to family needs and seats that are comfortable for long distance trips. If the Steed 6 is still out of reach then this is the bakkie to choose within the GWM camp.

5 JMC Vigus 2.4 double cab LX - R249 990

When it comes to looks then the Vigus can compete with just about any bakkie in SA. Its smooth lines underline its credentials as a bakkie targeted at the affordable, lifestyle bakkie market. But if you pay close attention to its styling, you may pick-up that it shares similarities with the previous generation Mazda BT-50, or even VW Amarok...
