Facelifted Haval H2 touches down in South Africa: local prices revealed

The facelifted Haval H2 has arrived in South Africa, with the local range again comprising four variants.

As before, each is powered by a turbocharged 1,5-litre, four-cylinder petrol engine (still sending the front wheels 105 kW and 202 N.m via either a six-speed manual gearbox or six-speed automatic transmission).

The Chinese firm’s updated H2 gains a revised grille, new headlamps (in LED form for Luxury variants) and updated front and rear bumpers. It furthermore features changes to the bonnet and fenders as well as new five-spoke 18-inch alloys.

In addition, all derivatives now boast six airbags as standard (City variant had previously made do with two), while Apple CarPlay has been rolled out across the range, too. Haval SA says a sunroof ships standard regardless of your chosen model, with Luxury variants upgrading to a panoramic item.

Other minor updates include various “upholstery and finishing” tweaks, along with a new gear-shifter design for the automatic models.

Check out pricing below (by our maths, the firm has effectively added R5 000 to the pre-facelift prices). A five-year/100 000 km warranty and a five-year/60 000 km service plan are included.

Pricing:

Haval H2 1,5T City: R269 900
Haval H2 1,5T Luxury: R294 900
Haval H2 1,5T City AT: R304 900
Haval H2 1,5T Luxury AT: R329 900

All you need to know about Haval’s all-new H2

Since coming to market in May 2017, Haval South Africa was a fresh, new offering in the mid-size SUV market. Leading the charge back then was the H2.

This SUV came up against rivals such as the Renault Duster and Ford EcoSport.

And while its rivals returned respectable sales figures over, the H2 had to, basically, start from scratch. In its first month, June 2017, it registered 34 units.

At the end of December 2019, Haval sold 464 units for the month.

According to Haval, they are averaging around 400 units per month over this period.

The new-generation H2 will look to continue the trend set by its forebearer and build on the 7235 units sold to date.

Pricing:

- Haval H2 2WD City MT: R269 900

- Haval H2 2WD Luxury MT: R294 900

- Haval H2 2WD City AT: R304 900

- Haval H2 2WD Luxury AT: R329 900

Haval H2 (2020) Launch Review

Summary

Our time with the facelifted Haval H2 was short, but suffice to say we're itching to delve deeper into what this updated Chinese model has to offer. We'd love to get our hands on a unit that has been run in and drive it on some gravel roads. With 180 mm of ground clearance, it surely should offer more than enough ability to traverse the odd gravel route or farm road? As for rivals, this is one of the most hotly-contested segments in the market, with the likes of the Renault Duster, Volkswagen T-Cross, Hyundai Creta, Ford EcoSport and many more are fighting for their place in the sun. Haval is proof that the Chinese brand is dynamic; its products' quality gets better with each new model we test.

Should you buy one? Keenly priced, with solid aftermarket support and a substantial warranty/service plan, the Haval H2 again represents astonishing value; it should continue right where its predecessor left off. Impressively, the price hasn't increased dramatically either – the starting price of the previous range was R264 900 and the flagship offering retailed at R324 900 (updated pricing is at the bottom of this article). We're keen to spend more time with the H2 and eagerly looking forward to giving it a thorough evaluation.

Haval H2 – price in South Africa (January 2020)

H2 City 6MT - R269 900
H2 Luxury 6MT - R294 900
H2 City 6AT - R304 900
H2 Luxury 6AT - R329 900

The Haval H2 is sold with a 5-year/100 000km warranty, a 5-year/60 000 km service plan and with 5-year/unlimited km Roadside Assitance.

Now that I think about it, it makes sense. Haval is china, no play store etc in china, so I guess it wont come anytime soon. Unless they manufacture it somewhere else?
Fair point & only made in China yes.

GWM P Series Bakkie - SA Details

This is the GWM P Series bakkie and it's coming to SA in 2020. Here's all you need to know about this rival to the Ford Ranger, Toyota Hilux and Volkswagen Amarok.

Billed as the most ambitious Chinese double-cab to date, GWM has stated its intentions to become a 'Top 3' bakkie brand with its new P Series.

Mechanically, the P Series is powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol which drives all four wheels via an 8-speed ZF automatic transmission. The 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine boosts 140 kW and 360 Nm. GWM has also equipped the P Series with 3 differential locks, which should theoretically give it unrivalled off-road ability. GWM has not yet been clear as to whether the 3 differential locks will be a standard configuration or optional, as part of a dedicated off-road package. Features? Plenty. There is a surround-view camera, rear-view camera and 12 radar pods allow for lane departure warning and adaptive cruise control. All active safety interventions systems are managed by Bosch’s 9.3-generation stability control.

When is it coming to South Africa? During the recent Haval H2 facelift launch in January 2020, we chatted to GWM/Haval staff about its pickup aspirations and they confirmed the P Series introduction in South Africa will begin in April 2020, with the launch of the mid-spec model. The flagship GWM P Series bakkie will be arriving in South Africa towards the end of 2020 and while pricing and spec are yet to be confirmed, we suspect the Chinese will come in with an aggressive pricing strategy.

Ranger has to watch out, there fan base had enough of the crap quality and service and might give a new player a chance! Hilux has nothing to worry about they just keep selling like hot cakes!

I like the name of P series btw. They can tie it with compatriot Huawei & call it P30 or P40.

If P30 then unofficially the P-Titty.

DRIVEN: Haval H2 1,5T Luxury AT

Another weak point in the H2’s otherwise impressive armoury is the 1,5-litre turbopetrol engine. On paper, compared with its 1,0-/1,2-litre rivals, the unit’s outputs of 105 kW and 202 N.m look generous but the powertrain simply isn’t on par with the best European offerings in terms of efficiency and performance. In day-to-day driving, it’s impressive enough, staying hushed and rowing the little Haval along at a decent lick. Up the pace, however, and there’s a spike in noise without much gain in forward momentum. The ruckus is especially notable because the vehicle’s overall noise suppression is better than average.

The 1,5T is also rather heavy on fuel. My co-driver and I averaged 8,9 L/100 km in mixed-use driving. On our fuel route, that 2017 test unit posted 8,1 L/100 km, which stands in stark contrast to the Citroën C3 Aircross’ 7,1 L/100 km and the T-Cross 1,0 TSI’s incredible 5,2 L/100 km in similar conditions.

The rest of the feedback is more positive. The H2 offers an absorbent ride without much body lean, while Haval has clearly worked on the steering system as the rate of response feels more natural than in earlier iterations. The six-speed automatic transmission transmission does a good job of keeping the engine on the boil but I did notice quite a bit of hunting between fifth and sixth gears while cruising at the national limit.

Two and a half years after we first drove an H2, its sheen hasn’t waned much. Despite my reservations about the interior’s suitability for family use and the powertrain’s shortcomings, Haval’s small crossover remains a formidable player in its segment and this facelifted version should only broaden its appeal. Considering the vehicle’s general competence, therefore, just imagine how good the next-generation H2 will be...

A bit of FYI... So I decided to to De-cat my Haval H6C. The guys who did it for me reckon the engine is exactly the same as the Golf 6 engine.... I also removed the big tail box and put in a smaller one (left the stock middle box). Car has i nice low rumble sound (not loud at all) and it sounds like the GTi DSG when changing gears, kind of a little bubble and pop as it shifts. Seems much more responsive too.
Good evening SirFooK'nG,

I just read ur post... Did you managed to chip ur H6C?

Does anyone know how much a re-map of the H6C chip costs? And what will Haval do when you take it for its first service?
Hi. Has anyone managed to chip their H6C and did it make a difference to the fuel consumption

FIRST DRIVE | Haval's new H2 compact SUV can roll with the premium 'big dogs' at an affordable price

But how does it drive?

The H2's looks have been improved with subtle styling, and it offers a pleasant drive. Inside the soft-touch materials on the dash and door panels are more than impressive. It feels so good I could barely stop touching it just to make sure. It's unbelievable that this kind of fit and finish can come from a Chinese brand and it makes one think why premium brands charge us so much more for that same level of specification. There are some plastic bits on the centre console, but then again it's the same kind of plastic you'll find in a nearly R1-million Ford Mustang.

There were some squeaks when you're in a tight bend and your left leg pushes against the centre console, but then I also heard the same crackling sound coming from the Mercedes-Benz CLS I had driven earlier this week.

The models on launch were only a couple hundred kilometres old. The car we had driven on test literally had less than 100km on the clock, and while that's great, it would run much better once the engine has been 'run in'. Despite that, the H2 offers a comfortable, and pleasant drive, and the 6-speed auto gearbox is a treat on the Cape's gorgeous Clarence Drive. Gear shifts are not too whiny and are smooth enough to get used to. There's not too much body roll, is spacious for all passengers, and has a decent-sized boot.

If you are looking for something away from the norm, Haval's H2 is a great option and one I can genuinely say you should go and take a test drive in if you're in the market. You'll be surprised at its quality and all-round good value-for-money proposition it offers.

It's starting price of R269 900 is its biggest attraction, and there's no hidden agenda. You get more than just what you see in the H2, that's for sure.

Pricing

- Haval H2 2WD City MT: R269 900

- Haval H2 2WD Luxury MT: R294 900

- Haval H2 2WD City AT: R304 900

- Haval H2 2WD Luxury AT: R329 900
